What does SDE mean?

Spatial Database Engine (SDE) or ArcSDE, is a software developed by Esri that aims to enable the usage of Relational DataBase Management System (RDBMS) for spatial data.
SDE enables spatial data to be stored, managed, and quickly retrieved from leading commercial database management systems like Oracle, Microsoft SQL Server, Sybase, IBM DB2, and Informix.
SDE was originally developed for the Geographic Information System (GIS) community and the Database Management System (DBMS) community to extend their databases with spatial technology.
