Associate Professor of International Communication and International Relations, in the School of International Service, American University, Washington, DC. I conduct international sociocultural field research and complex qualitative analysis on culture and international security, ideology-formation and strategic communication, sociocultural drivers of conflict, cultural studies analysis of global social media networks, identity narratives and strategies of social movements and networks, and governance, security and stabilization. Current research investigates sociocultural drivers of conflict environments in Afghanistan, South Asia and the Middle East, based on first-hand field observation using in-depth interviews, participant observation, and narrative identity-formation among populations, insurgent networks, civilian and military organizations within conflict states. Field research in conflict zones investigates the cultural evolution of insurgent networks, the cultural production of population support for extremists, strategic communication and information network environment of conflict across multimedia platforms, forms of communication and cooperation among local national leaders in civilian and security organizations, capability development in governance and security, and prospects for stabilization. I employ theory-building, methodological innovation for deeper analysis of sociocultural lessons applied to current and future population-based conflicts & instabilities.
