The most commonly used sampling techniques in systematic investigations are probability and nonpr... more The most commonly used sampling techniques in systematic investigations are probability and nonprobability methods. While probability sampling is based on the principle of a random selection of participants in a particular study, non-random selection is the basis of probability sampling. The random and non-random classifications appear to have some potential flaws and are insufficient to represent all sampling procedures involving human participants. Similarly, most authors believe that they use random sampling techniques, although, in reality, they do not use true random sampling. Therefore, the objective of this article is to highlight that sampling techniques can be characterized as true-random, quasi-random, or nonrandom, rather than merely random and non-random. Attempts have been made to demonstrate how inadequate random and non-random sampling classification is, the characteristics of true-random, quasi-random, and nonrandom sampling procedures, and when each sampling procedure is appropriate. How it is conceivable to estimate the characteristics of the population directly or indirectly from the sample has been addressed in light of the selection of sampling units technique.

When Does a Researcher Choose a Quantitative, Qualitative, or Mixed Research Approach?

In educational studies, the paradigm war over quantitative and qualitative research approaches ha... more In educational studies, the paradigm war over quantitative and qualitative research approaches has raged for more than half a century. The focus in the late twentieth century was on the distinction between the two approaches, and the motivation was to retain one of the approaches&#39; supremacy. Since the early twenty-first century, there has been a growing interest in situating in the middle position and combining both approaches into a single study or a series of studies. Despite these signs of progress, when it comes to using the appropriate research approach at the right time, beginner educational researchers remain perplexed. This paper, therefore, provides useful guidelines that facilitate the choice of quantitative, qualitative, or mixed research approaches in educational inquiry. To achieve this objective, this article comprises three distinct and underlying areas of interest, which have been structured into three sections. The first section highlights the distinctions between quantitative and qualitative research approaches. The second section discusses the paradigm views that underpin the choice of a particular research approach. Finally, an effort has been made to determine the appropriate time to opt for any of the research approaches that facilitate successful educational investigations. Since truth and the means used to discover it are both dynamic, it is also essential to foresight innovative approaches to research with distinguishing features of applications to educational research.

The carryover effects of college dishonesty on the professional workplace dishonest behaviors: A systematic review

There have been few, yet scarce, studies that focused on the link between college and workplace dishonesty. This review aims to bring into the limelight evidence-based consistency of the links between college and workplace dishonesty. Four databases were systematically scanned and yielded 18 articles related to dishonesty at the college and workplace levels were retrieved. Recognizing that there are only a few studies in this area that limit generalizations of this article, there are pieces of evidence that support a considerable association between college and workplace dishonest behaviors. Academic dishonesty in college can be considered more than just a matter of immediate academic repercussions, and it can also indicate potential workplace dishonesty to some degree. Instead, it tends to be a choice between producing ethical and unethical citizens or between preserving and smashing the profession. We have attempted to maintain academic integrity by developing multi-level intervention approaches that involve students, educators, administrators, and policymakers.

Notwithstanding strong efforts have been made to produce high-quality articles in terms of contents, methodological approaches and scientific credibility, the oversights of very technical details of specific APA style and formatting have been found. From professional points of views, these oversights might certainly affect the quality of the journal. The main objective of this paper is to uncover the frequent errors that overlooked within the articles since 2014, and thereby to conquer the errors using sixth edition publication manual of the APA and up-to-date manuscripts that are available at the http://apastyle.apa.org/. I presented a series of errors observed in seven randomly selected articles regarding the titles, abstracts, citations, methods, statistical presentations and lists of reference entries to take viable measures that tackle the errors virtually. Finally, based on the observed mismatches, I forwarded implications for the quick use of publication manual of APA that could support the authors, the reviewers and the examiners of the journal articles.

One means of realizing this quality in higher education institutions is to alleviate academic dishonest behaviors that hamper the creativity and analytical skills of stu prevalence of academic dishonesty behaviors, perceptions of students regarding academic dishonesty behaviors, and to tests whether there is gender difference in exam related and assignment related academic dishonesty behavior Bahir Dar University (BDU) undergraduate students. The findings showed that academic dishonesty was prevalent among the students and majority of the students committed academic dishonesty at least once. The practices of dishonesty behaviors were more prevalent in assignment related works than in exam related works. In some aspects of academic dishonesty behaviors, there was significant gender difference both in prevalence of academic dishonesty behaviors and how the students perceive behaviors related to academic dishonesty.

There is also a consensus that social media have both pros and perils on students' academic affairs. The objective of this study is to assess how Ethiopian secondary school students perceive the benefits and risks associated with social media use. Data were collected from 353 secondary schools students through self-reported questionnaire. The findings reveal that the leading perceived benefits of social media are recreational and relational purposes. The role social media play in students' academic activities is likely less considered. As a pilot study in a developing country, this study may raise awareness of schools, teachers, and parents about the benefits and risks of using social media for teenager students. Thereby, there will be future researches that enable them to effectively monitor their students to use social media primarily for academic purposes.

African researchers could have contributed vital scientific products to the world's scientific en... more African researchers could have contributed vital scientific products to the world's scientific enterprise, yet they have a limited share. There is even a piece of evidence that shows that their role has been falling in the scientific research publication. This has a direct bearing on the development of research, knowledge, and technology transfer in Africa. There have been a few attempts to comprehend this dearth, however, most of the endeavors have been from outsiders' points of view. The objective of this study is, therefore, to uncover the hands-on challenges of African scholars and bring into the spotlight from the native Africans' perspectives. The essential motivation behind this study is to evoke a subject of scholarly forums on how to extend their contributions to scientific repertoire amidst tremendous challenges. Data were collected from all the accessible scholars from six African countries through focus group discussions. A qualitative research approach based on a grounded theory method was used to handle the data collected from the participants. The present findings show that African scholars' challenges are progressively complex and long-standing. The challenges span personal inadequacies to the more extensive system related issues. Therefore, calling for forums for Africans and the international communities to discuss the challenges for reasonable intervention stands indispensable. It will be, therefore, possible to increase their share of the world's scientific repository and improve their scientific research works. More than a decade ago, along with this growing concern, peer-led collaborative learning (PLCL) approach has been adopted and stuck into Ethiopian educational systems. By following these actions, there are certain attempts to understand the practices of PLCL in educational settings, however, there are no more studies regarding the role of PLCL for secondary school students. This study is, therefore, intended to examine the hands-on roles of PLCL for secondary school students. The participants in this study were 991 students that were recruited from six public secondary schools via stratified random sampling. Data were collected using questionnaires and focus group discussions whereas analyses were made using descriptive statistical methods and narrative description of data. The findings show that hypothetically the roles of PLCL for secondary school students are considered to be academic, psychosocial and economic. Ironically the approach by far rewards group leaders to do all activities that would be done by each of the group members increases the dependency of middle and low achiever students and becomes a milieu of sexual harassment mainly for female students. Acknowledging more research findings would be warranted, we suggest that the practice of PLCL ought to be arranged towards subject specific task orientation and the quality of mentoring processes should be restructured in the form of more supportive, participative and cooperative ways.

The objective of this article is, therefore, to assess whether the expectation of teachers for their students‟ academic achievement can predict their motivation to teach in the Ethiopian secondary schools. Assuming that teachers of public and private schools may have different levels of expectation for their students' academic achievement and motivation to teach, we attempted to measure the differences. We used a mixed research design supported concurrent triangulation method to assess teachers‟ expectation for students‟ academic achievement and motivation to teach. We administered questionnaires to 368 secondary school teachers and held a focus group discussion with 20 teachers. Furthermore, we interviewed 12 teachers. Analysis of the data was carried out using descriptive statistical methods, t-tests, regression, and Cohen tests. The results offer insight that teachers have low expectation for students' academic status, which in turn associated with low motivation to teach. The formation of low expectation and the low motivation for teaching in part is accounted to the socioeconomic status of the country and the economic values of education. These patterns have a direct bearing on students' academic behaviors at school and impoverish their academic achievement. The implication is that the country ought to prioritize investing in teachers alongside physical resources and epistemological assumptions.

Having skimmed through recently published articles of Bahir Journal of Education (BJE), I inadver... more Having skimmed through recently published articles of Bahir Journal of Education (BJE), I inadvertently engrossed with a few imperfections that are incompatible with a currently in use publication manual of the American Psychological Association (APA) style. Notwithstanding strong efforts have been made to produce high-quality articles in terms of contents, methodological approaches and scientific credibility, the oversights of very technical details of specific APA style and formatting have been found. From professional points of views, these oversights might certainly affect the quality of the journal. The main objective of this paper is to uncover the frequent errors that overlooked within the articles since 2014, and thereby to conquer the errors using sixth edition publication manual of the APA and up-to-date manuscripts that are available at the http://apastyle.apa.org/. I presented a series of errors observed in seven randomly selected articles regarding the titles, abstracts, citations, methods, statistical presentations and lists of reference entries to take viable measures that tackle the errors virtually. Finally, based on the observed mismatches, I forwarded implications for the quick use of publication manual of APA that could support the authors, the reviewers and the examiners of the journal articles.

One means of realizing this quality in higher education institutions is to alleviate academic dishonest behaviors that hamper the creativity and analytical skills of stu prevalence of academic dishonesty behaviors, perceptions of students regarding academic dishonesty behaviors, and to tests whether there is gender difference in exam related and assignment related academic dishonesty behavior Bahir Dar University (BDU) undergraduate students. The findings showed that academic dishonesty was prevalent among the students and majority of the students committed academic dishonesty at least once. The practices of dishonesty behaviors were more prevalent in assignment related works than in exam related works. In some aspects of academic dishonesty behaviors, there was significant gender difference both in prevalence of academic dishonesty behaviors and how the students perceive behaviors related to academic dishonesty.

There is also a consensus that social media have both pros and perils on students' academic affairs. The objective of this study is to assess how Ethiopian secondary school students perceive the benefits and risks associated with social media use. Data were collected from 353 secondary schools students through self-reported questionnaire. The findings reveal that the leading perceived benefits of social media are recreational and relational purposes. The role social media play in students' academic activities is likely less considered. As a pilot study in a developing country, this study may raise awareness of schools, teachers, and parents about the benefits and risks of using social media for teenager students. Thereby, there will be future researches that enable them to effectively monitor their students to use social media primarily for academic purposes.

When does a researcher choose a quantitative, qualitative, or mixed research approach

In educational studies, the paradigm war over quantitative and qualitative research approaches ha... more In educational studies, the paradigm war over quantitative and qualitative research approaches has raged for more than half a century. The focus in the late twentieth century was on the distinction between the two approaches, and the motivation was to retain one of the approaches' supremacy. Since the early twenty-first century, there has been a growing interest in situating in the middle position and combining both approaches into a single study or a series of studies. Despite these signs of progress, when it comes to using the appropriate research approach at the right time, beginner educational researchers remain perplexed. This paper, therefore, provides useful guidelines that facilitate the choice of quantitative, qualitative, or mixed research approaches in educational inquiry. To achieve this objective, this article comprises three distinct and underlying areas of interest, which have been structured into three sections. The first section highlights the distinctions between quantitative and qualitative research approaches. The second section discusses the paradigm views that underpin the choice of a particular research approach. Finally, an effort has been made to determine the appropriate time to opt for any of the research approaches that facilitate successful educational investigations. Since truth and the means used to discover it are both dynamic, it is also essential to foresight innovative approaches to research with distinguishing features of applications to educational research.

There have been few, yet scarce, studies that focused on the link between college and workplace dishonesty. This review aims to bring into the limelight evidence-based consistency of the links between college and workplace dishonesty. Four databases were systematically scanned and yielded 18 articles related to dishonesty at the college and workplace levels were retrieved. Recognizing that there are only a few studies in this area that limit generalizations of this article, there are pieces of evidence that support a considerable association between college and workplace dishonest behaviors. Academic dishonesty in college can be considered more than just a matter of immediate academic repercussions, and it can also indicate potential workplace dishonesty to some degree. Instead, it tends to be a choice between producing ethical and unethical citizens or between preserving and smashing the profession. We have attempted to maintain academic integrity by developing multi-level intervention approaches that involve students, educators, administrators, and policymakers.

There is even a piece of evidence that shows that their role has been falling in the scientific research publication. This has a direct bearing on the development of research, knowledge, and technology transfer in Africa. There have been a few attempts to comprehend this dearth, however, most of the endeavors have been from outsiders' points of view. The objective of this study is, therefore, to uncover the hands-on challenges of African scholars and bring into the spotlight from the native Africans' perspectives. The essential motivation behind this study is to evoke a subject of scholarly forums on how to extend their contributions to scientific repertoire amidst tremendous challenges. Data were collected from all the accessible scholars from six African countries through focus group discussions. A qualitative research approach based on a grounded theory method was used to handle the data collected from the participants. The present findings show that African scholars' challenges are progressively complex and long-standing. The challenges span personal inadequacies to the more extensive system related issues. Therefore, calling for forums for Africans and the international communities to discuss the challenges for reasonable intervention stands indispensable. It will be, therefore, possible to increase their share of the world's scientific repository and improve their scientific research works. This study is, therefore, intended to examine the hands-on roles of PLCL for secondary school students. The participants in this study were 991 students that were recruited from six public secondary schools via stratified random sampling. Data were collected using questionnaires and focus group discussions whereas analyses were made using descriptive statistical methods and narrative description of data. The findings show that hypothetically the roles of PLCL for secondary school students are considered to be academic, psychosocial and economic. Ironically the approach by far rewards group leaders to do all activities that would be done by each of the group members increases the dependency of middle and low achiever students and becomes a milieu of sexual harassment mainly for female students. Acknowledging more research findings would be warranted, we suggest that the practice of PLCL ought to be arranged towards subject specific task orientation and the quality of mentoring processes should be restructured in the form of more supportive, participative and cooperative ways.

Teachers' Expectation of Students' Achievement as a Predictor of Motivation to Teach in Ethiopian Secondary Schools: Implication for Quality Education

It is believed that a teacher‟s expectation of students' achievement profoundly affects teaching ... more It is believed that a teacher‟s expectation of students' achievement profoundly affects teaching and learning processes in real settings. Teachers‟ expectation influences the teachers‟ behaviors, determines their degree of career motivation and affects the subsequent students‟ achievements. The objective of this article is, therefore, to assess whether the expectation of teachers for their students‟ academic achievement can predict their motivation to teach in the Ethiopian secondary schools. Assuming that teachers of public and private schools may have different levels of expectation for their students' academic achievement and motivation to teach, we attempted to measure the differences. We used a mixed research design supported concurrent triangulation method to assess teachers‟ expectation for students‟ academic achievement and motivation to teach. We administered questionnaires to 368 secondary school teachers and held a focus group discussion with 20 teachers. Furthermore, we interviewed 12 teachers. Analysis of the data was carried out using descriptive statistical methods, t-tests, regression, and Cohen tests. The results offer insight that teachers have low expectation for students' academic status, which in turn associated with low motivation to teach. The formation of low expectation and the low motivation for teaching in part is accounted to the socioeconomic status of the country and the economic values of education. These patterns have a direct bearing on students' academic behaviors at school and impoverish their academic achievement. The implication is that the country ought to prioritize investing in teachers alongside physical resources and epistemological assumptions.
