The Amazon Rainforest Is Under Threat

For generations, the Amazon rainforest has stood as an awe-inspiring testament to the beauty and power of nature. Sadly, it is being destroyed rather than protected.

That’s where Amazon Rainforest Conservancy (ARC) steps in. We are on the ground, actively protecting and defending 850+ hectares of the world’s greatest rainforest.

ARC is a registered Canadian charity working in partnership with two Peruvian non-profit sister organizations: Amazon Rainforest Conservancy Northern Peru (ARCNP) and Peruvian Amazon Rainforest Conservancy (PARC). Together, we work to protect, conserve and restore the threatened biodiversity of tropical rainforest habitats in the Peruvian Amazon. With your help we can expand the lands in our care, reforest degraded areas and protect the species living there.

Securing A Wildlife Corridor

In 2022, Amazon Rainforest Conservancy Northern Peru (ARCNP) launched a project to create a wildlife corridor in the valley between the two mountain ranges of the Cordillera Escalera Conservation Area.

The surrounding mountains were officially protected in 2005 but the valley was excluded due to the presence of 170 cattle-ranching families. Endangered species are now at even greater risk from human-wildlife conflict and habitat fragmentation. ARCNP is strategically buying land from retiring farmers to create and expand this wildlife corridor.

This is a vital step toward restoring safe passage for wildlife, reconnecting habitats, and building coexistence between people and nature.

TURNING PASTURES INTO RAINFOREST

A core focus of our conservation efforts is the reforestation of degraded parcels of land acquired through our ongoing land purchases. Our Forest Guardians collect seeds and seedlings from the healthiest native hardwood trees and bring them back to our nurseries. Once matured into saplings, these native trees are replanted to restore forest cover.

Defending a Biodiversity Hotspot

Tambopata, Peru is one of the world’s most diverse ecosystems. It is home to world record numbers of bird and butterfly species. It is also under threat. Illegal gold miners are transforming what was once pristine rainforest into a toxic wasteland.

The Peruvian Amazon Rainforest Conservancy (PARC) holds the title to and protects a 620-hectare (1,700-acre) Brazil nut concession in this region. It is a sanctuary for old growth hardwood trees and home to many endangered species such as the giant river otter, harpy eagle, large-headed capuchin monkey and spectacled caiman.

PROTECT THE AMAZON.

DEFEND ITS WILDLIFE.

We’re passionate about the work we do – but we can’t do it without you.
