“I’ve always wanted to learn to quilt”

Learner on a 'Quilt in a Day' course with Amanda Jane Textiles

Today’s post is about my QUILT IN A DAY course. The last person who came to do the course (about a week or so ago) began by saying “I’ve always wanted to learn to quilt” and she wasn’t the only one. Often, individuals come at a transition point: maybe they have just had a significant birthday, they have retired or taken semi-retirement. Younger people come to learn to make a quilt so they can indulge in a creative, relaxing hobby which will serve as a counterpoint to their busy professional lives.

Whatever the reason, each person has ended the day with a small quilt and has often been astonished at how much they have achieved in the day. I ask each person to tell me their favourite colours before they come and I curate a special collection of fabrics for them to use on the day. Each quilt is therefore unique.

I don’t show the finished quilts online as I like each learner to see the quilt coming in to existence as they go through the various steps. There is also a degree of design choice as the day goes on, so I want people to feel free and not be influenced by something they have seen already.

Each day is different because each learner is different and comes to the course with various skills and talents. The great thing about starting quilt-making is that you just need to be able to stitch in a straight line on the sewing machine before you start. Everything else is covered. By the way, if you need to learn how to get started on a sewing machine, I have a half-day course for that too: LEARN TO USE A SEWING MACHINE.

The QUILT IN A DAY course represents excellent value for money: all the materials you need are provided, a full day’s one-to-one tuition is given , with follow-up notes afterwards) and tea/coffee and biscuits are laid on for the breaks (you just need to bring a packed lunch).

The course would make a wonderful Mother’s Day gift, a birthday, anniversary or retirement present.

At the start of the next financial year (6th April 2025) the price of the course is set to increase. However, if you book before 6 April you will get it at the existing price, even if the course takes place after 6th April.
