Chromosome numbers of two species: V. armena, (2n=10) and V. multijuga (2n=10) are reported for the first time. 2n=14 for V. ciceroidea is a new count for this species, the previous report was 2n=28. Karyological data are presented for all the studied species. The chromosomes of all species were mainly metacentric to submetacentric. Based on Stebbines karyotype classification, the studied Vicia species were placed in three classes: 2A, 3A and 1B. V. monantha had the most symmetrical karyotype and could be considered more primitive than other studied species. Five species namely V. armena, V. aucheri, V. akhmaganica, V. persica and V. variegata showed 2n= 10 chromosomes and also had similar karyotype characters.

The main pattern in seed coat sculpturing in the species was papillose, but the size and the number of side ribs in papillae and the density of papillae, were different in various species. Four morphological characters of seeds: relative hilum length and shape, relative position of the lens to hilum and seed circumference were constant. The results indicate that seed morphology is not useful in circumscribing sections in Vicia, but applicable in delimiting species and seed coat microsculpturing and testa patterns and that can provide additional characters for delimiting natural groups. However, the variation of these characters was too little to be applied for separating close species.

This genus is considered to be an Irano-Turanian and Mediterranean element and is distributed in south-western and central Asia and in the central, southern, north-western and south-western parts of Iran as well. The subspecies classification of the genus is not consensus and various classifications could be found in different taxonomy resources. In this study various specimens from different regions of Iran were studied. In addition, anatomical and palynological characters were used to perform a cluster analysis in order to determine species groups. In the end, our results confirmed that Z. baldschuanica and Z. glabricaulis were distinct species.

The results of LM showed that pollen grains are tricolpate and the overall shape is spherical to subprolate. In polar view, most of pollen grains were 3-lobed with convex lobes. The size of pollen was very variable. The Exine was reticulate. The characters of muri such as shape and size of lumen were varied in different species. The lumen was isodiametric or heteromorphic and the patterns were orbicular, elliptic or polygonal with rounded angle. Based on former studies the pollen grains in this study were referable to the following types: Salix alba type 6, S. issatissensis type 1, S. acmophylla, S. zygostemon and S. cinerea type 2, S. elbursensis type 5, S. excelsa type 3 and 6. Our results showed that shape and size of pollen grins are similar but the exine sculpturing is different and can be used for distinguishing the species. In addition, the exine pattern in S. zygostemon which is a hybrid species showed that S. cinerea is the male parent of this hybrid and the female parent is S. elbursensis.

Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and light microscopy (LM) were used to observe the epidermal characteristics and transverse sections of the leaves to assess taxonomic applications of these traits. The main distinguishing traits of the species included: the presence of prickles, macrohairs and microhairs, papillae and type of wax, adaxial ribs, number of bulliform cells, number of sclerenchymatous layers and shape of silica bodies. When constructing the phenogram of Aristideae using WARD’s method and based on the 7 qualitative and 18 quantitative anatomical traits showed four taxonomic-anatomic clades with a cophenetic correlation coefficient of 1.75. Kranz anatomy in S. raddiana differed from the one seen inS. paradisea. The presence of papillae and lack of macrohairs on the leaf epidermis in S. karelinii distinguished it from S. pennata. By present findings the placement of A. coerulescens as a variety of A. adscensionis has not been ascertained. An identification key is providedbased on anatomical traits. The anatomical features of the leaves were proved to be useful for species delimitation and as a supplementary tool for identifying taxa and macromorphological traits.

Problems in the taxonomy of the genus are due to high variability and polymorphism among different individuals and populations of certain species. Morphological characters of nectar scale have been considered as valuable taxonomical characters in some perennial species in some groups (Praemorsa, Grumosa, Rhizomatosa). To find out significant differences in characters among populations of certain species and among different species Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) was performed. In this study, herbarium specimens or fresh material were studied. Different shapes of nectar scale have been observed among populations of some species that is related to karyotype variability.

Leaf characteristics reflect the adaptive mechanism of plants to their environment. This mechanism is demonstrated through changes in anatomical, morphological, and physiological characteristics relative to environmental changes.MethodsSamples were taken from 2 species ofPlatanus orientalisL. andCeltis caucasicaWilld. in 10 urban forests of Tehran, Iran. In each study area, 50 leaves were collected from different directions of the canopy of each tree, and their area was measured by a leaf area meter instrument in a laboratory. Leaf moisture and specific leaf area (SLA) were also calculated. The data of air pollutants were obtained from the nearest pollution measurement stations to each study location.ResultsThe average percentage of moisture forP. orientalisandC. caucasicawas calculated as 49.6% and 41.9%, respectively. The averages of SLA were estimated 9.2 and 6.5 cm...

For studying the cladistic analysis of the species, 18 characters were studied. The characters have entered to the matrix as multistate character. For rooting the shortest tree, we have used three species: Alcea flavovirens, Althaea officinalis, Lavatera thuringiaca as out groups. By using parsimony analysis based on Fitch method the shortest tree with 8.67024 steps has resulted (RI=0.82, CI=0.64). The majority rules consensus tree has selected. The most parsimony cladogram didn't support monophyly of Malva species. The species in our analysis didn't occur in one clade. Also Bootstrap analysis didn't show the monophyly of Malva species.

In this study we focused on reproductive characters, which are not generally affected by environment. Our selected reproductive characters have been the stigma form, position of stigma towards the anthers, form of faucal scales, color, form and symmetry of flowers and characters of mericarps. An identification key using morphological and micromorphological characters has also been proposed. In the present paper above mentioned characters have been described for the first time in N. turcomanica M. Pop, N. lutea (Desr.) DC. var. flavescens Lipsky, N. persica Boiss. var. suchtelenioides (Riedl) Falatoury & Pakravan, N. diffusa Boiss. et Buhse, N. rosea (Bieb.) Link and N. melanocarpa Boiss. Nonea suchtelenioides H. Riedl has been decreased to the variety level of Nonea persica as N. persica Boiss. var. suchtelenioides (Riedl) Falatoury & Pakravan.

Gray, have been examined by LM and SEM. The polar axis (P), equatorial diameter (E), P/E ratio and exine patterns were measured. The pollen grains were found out to be 3-zonocolpate, euprolate to subprolate. The shortest polar axis to belong to C. tehranica (Boiss.) Rech.f. and the longest to belong to C. trigonelloides (Boiss.) Munz (28.15-37.3 μm); the shortest equatorial axis to belong to C. stocksiana (Boiss.) Nevski. and the longest to C. orientalis Schrödinger (17.5-25.2 μm). Based on exine ornamentation observed under SEM, two types of pollen grains were recognized. Type I, exine distinctly thickened at poles with broad colpi and stronglymicro-echinate sculpturing, and type II, with exine obtuse at poles, narrow colpi and weekly micro-echinate sculpturing. Pictures of all species and characteristics of pollen grain structure were presented. Our results showed that pollen shape and sculpturing were...
