6 – Interview of a local historian and folklore specialist

9/7/2024, 9:00-10:30am; report written by Xue Lei and transcription by Liu Xiaorong

(Laizhou Museum),

Interviewee: Yin Honglin 尹洪林 (Former director of the Donglai Cultural Research Office 东莱山文化研究室主任)

Yin Honglin is in his 70s. He was alert and warm to us but seemed a little confused about our purpose throughout the interview. His account during the interview was fragmented, often shifting abruptly from one topic to another. This made it difficult to piece together a cohesive understanding of his experiences and insights.

A Genealogy and the Xia Dynasty

During the interview, Mr. Yin kept referring to a manuscript he owned, titled Genealogical Records of the Taigu Branch of the Guo and Ge Clans 过戈氏太古宗支谱 (the Erhou Shrine at Dajishan is for the two clans). He claimed that the manuscript provides evidence of the Xia dynasty’s existence. Mr. Yin presented his findings to scholars in Beijing and, with their support, established the Donglai Cultural Research Office The manuscript was subsequently donated to an institution in Beijing, though he did not specify which one. When asked, Mr. Yin declined to show us a copy of the manuscript, possibly due to a suggestion from the Beijing scholars to keep the details confidential. After the interview, however, he graciously gave us several copies of books he authored, in which he recounts the story.

Mr. Yin’s role in the “renovation of Dajishan

In contrast, Mr. Yin showed less enthusiasm for our inquiries about Dajishan and provided few details about his work there between 2002 and 2005. He merely recalled that the site’s renovation had been proposed by him in 1996 and approved by then-mayor Zhang Xingqi 张行奇, with construction beginning in 2003.

Mr. Yin explained to us the name of the Pipa Rock and related it to a visit of Xiang Yu.

Speculating about Zheng Daozhao’s Daoist practice

Mr. Yin mentioned that Zheng Daozhao had five locations for his Daoist practice, with the primary one being Fuxiangting (阜乡亭) at Tiantangshan (天堂山), located just 5 li from Laizhou. Although Zhang Qiang pressed him for evidence, Mr. Yin disregarded the request. He described a pair of lion-shaped rocks situated in front of the site. He also noted that Tiantangshan is documented in the Gazetteer of Yexian.

More on the Laizhou Immortals

Mr. Yin mentioned that the immortal Anqisheng was a native of Laizhou, and there are still people with the surname An in Haicang 海沧, a district in today’s Laizhou. Wang Daoyi 王道翼 once practiced Daoism at Dajishan as well, although the record in the Wei shu does not specify the location of Wang’s practice.
