PEER collective: Locating Zheng Daozhao’s four mountains in the religious appropriation of space (May 2024)

On May 27-28th, Paula Suméra and Lia Wei attended to the annual colloquium organized by the PEER (Programme Espace et Religieux) collective in Université Jean Jaurès, Toulouse. PEER is a transdisciplinary grouping of scholars specialized in religious studies across different areas of the world, and encouraging the participation of young scholars or students. The 2024 colloquium’s theme was “Approches spatiales des liens entre le religieux et l’écologique“. Part of the organizing committee, Edouard L’Hérisson is also a colleague at Inalco and responsible for a research project within our research lab, IFRAE, in collaboration with Laurent Nespoulous, named “Circulations religieuses et appropriations spatiales“. Religious motivations behind the marking of space (through ritual or funerary activity, epigraphic and/or infrastructural interventions, bodily, oral or discursive/scriptural expressions) where explored over two days in a variety of contexts by specialists of the respective fields explored, with a constant focus on resources such as water, wood, stone, flora and fauna.

With a presentation entitled “Marquage épigraphique de la montagne en Chine médiévale: mobiles et devenir des paysages inscrits par Zheng Daozhao (455-516)”, we developed lines of enquiry on the religious motivations behind the individual appropriation of mountains by Zheng Daozhao in the 6th century, and we tried to address the “ecological” or at least the environmental dimension. We realized the importance of describing more accurately the type of territory grouped under the denomination “mountain”, with special attention to forms of the landscape that are named in the inscriptions, and to the floral/faunal elements that could be evoked through the figures of immortals for example, also mentioned in the inscriptions. To some extent, we could relate to presentations who stressed the intangible qualities of ritual or sacred spaced, as the markings we are studying are not associated with prominent man-made infrastructure.

This presentation was also the occasion to review major works on famous mountains in China, from Chavannes’ monograph (1910) on Mount Tai to Naquin’s recent proposal of a history of the same mountain centered on local resources (2023), as well as current endeavors to cross-reference different types of sources, to include political and social contexts, to compare Buddhist and Taoist appropriations (Julch 2022), and to investigate typologies and classifications of famous or holy mountains (Goossaert et Tsuchiya 2022). We tried to locate the ‘medieval turn’ in the appropriation of mountains, also including in our readings Marianne Bujard’s work on the tension between how local and state cult and the epigraphic documentation of mountain cults or Robson’s (2009) study on the Southern Peak, thinking about how fragmented territories and the proximity of urban centres shaped our 6th century landscapes.
