Channel 4 / alternative cabaret
Hello all,

I'm working on a new Channel 4 talent show and am looking for exciting new acts from the alternative cabaret scene (and what a scene it is!)

I'd love to hear your recommendations for 'weird and wonderful' variety performers (along the lines of 'Busty Heart') for a potential feature on the show. Or maybe you just know someone with an amazing party trick - no act is too crazy!

Masha Era– Non-existence is an electronic musical performance produced with the collaboration of acclaimed Russian electronic musician Ilia Shapovalov. Progressive house, techno and electro rhythms come along with cabaret visual acts.

Masha ERA is a lyrical artist who creates and performs tragic, grotesque and comic songs.

Over the past five years, Masha has transversed the cutting-edge of visual art and non-traditional theatre.

Her show is close to theatre performance, making use of the latest interactive methods and technologies in visual art.

Non-existence is a video installation where a white girl appears and sings a fairy lullaby in a black room-cube. Any person entering this cube feels himself out of time and space and his own introspection.

Les fleurs mortes is a nostalgic video take of etalons and images from the beginning of the last century. Though now dead, the models retain an immense beauty.

Having visited a number of contemporary theatre festivals in France, Masha has been inspired and worked with illustrious famed theatrical reformers and cult figures, including director of le Citron Jeaun art-lab Bruno Schnebelin, founder of fairy Snow show Slava Polunin, AKHE Russian engineering theatre.

Masha ERA – Non-existence is an electronic musical performance produced with the collaboration of acclaimed Russian electronic musician Ilia Shapovalov. Shapovalov is considered to be one of Russia’s most inventive contemporary musicians with a trademark style that incorporates progressive house, techno and electro rhythms. His music draws from material the world over and is presented together with original video art screen installations.

Taking place at the Geisha Lounge, Hockley, Nottingham.

Does anyone know how to make them? I've googled for instructions but no luck :(

(The reason is because I want to make my own designs -for me to wear myself, rather than to sell-which I don't see anyone selling, not because I am a cheapskate.)

Any help would be appreciated...oh, and being a vegan, I won't buy do-it-yourself kits that contain leather.

I am on the search for a burlesque magazine available within the UK. I am interested in the Burlesque scene and as I live in the UK it makes sense for me to be looking at what artists we have right here in the UK and learn more about venues here etc. So if anyone can help I would be most grateful! The Bohemianauts vs The Flash Monkey
This wednesday, the 20th December, The Bohemianauts will be playing once more at Kinky Mambo(145 Upper Street, 9.30pm, Free entry), with the added bonus that the bar will be hosting the Xmas party for The Flash Monkey burlesque crew - so expect an extra dresy night with those Flash Monkey boys playing a set, as well as The Bohemianauts.
We're doing the next two wednesdays as well, so get on down and come and say "Hi!"

favourite sort of performance: ones which are well choreographed and skillful - i love seeing circus skills in action. Ones which show character.

Mixing the box-squeezing, song-bellowing talents of my "good" self with the walkabout sax honking, russian singing and tango dancing absurdities of my old mate Andy we promise to entertain you for a good hour and a half from 9pm or thereabouts...

Tom Waits, and yet is something altogether different.

Vaudevillian musings
    So here we are in the naughty noughties, increasingly awash with all things burlesque, vaudevillian and generally va va voom...a time of glamour (I love the derivation of this word - a magic spell) and illusion. Just trawl through MySpace and you can see how popular all this is.
Several years ago a piece of  newspaper astrology (an end of the year piece in The Independant, I think) made the point that we should expect an upswelling of decadence and high times as we step into this new century, and boy, has it been bourne out. The last time I went to the Glastonbury Festival (this would be back in 2000), I was glad to see the beginnings of all this, with Lost Vagueness spawning a trend of mud-spattered ballgowns and tattered top hat 'n tails - as someone who'd been wearing ruffled shirts to perform in at festies since '98, it was a relief not to be the only one constructively overdressed.
Awash with all this now (although strangely alienated from the scene, living in Clermont Ferrand, as I do), I begin to muse on its meaning . Do we search for release? Voyeuristic/exhibitionist thrills? Is it an escape from the increasingly repressive environment of le monde quotidien, or can it become a real challenge to the status quo? Will we end up like the MC in the final scene of Cabaret, singing to an audience of Brownshirts?
I suppose what I'm asking is - where's the radical content? Beyond the shock value? Don't get me wrong - I genuinely don't know where to look - I'm sure this stuff is out there somewhere. It's just that my intuition tells me that a good deal of the scene is ducking the issues (or simply not concerned with them), and I'm interested in communicating with those of you out there who really want to shape this emerging (or reviving) artform into something with a little more punch, more poetry...
I'm reminded of John Fox, writing in Engineers of The Imagination:
"...carnival can all too easily be a surrogate revolution, a placebo used to purge and pacify resistance to oppression, with no real impact on the dominant order"

Hi, i'm pretty new to this whole live journal thing, but it seems pretty good, and this is an interesting community! I currently work as a performer, and am still educating myself more and more in the art of performance. I'm currently studying Performing Arts at Exeter College, which is where i found out about Music Hall, Vaudeville and Burlesque, and i think there should be more of it in this country!

What's your favourite sort of performance? I like Street Theatre a lot, but also enjoy performing on stage. I really enjoy well choreographed tidy stage routines, with lots of character!

Who are your idols? Bobby May, Ben Smalls, Francis Brunn, Marcel Marceau, to name but a few!
