Quick take on FKO 16

Since we all know from my history that I'm probably not terribly likely to write a WHOLE con report, I'm going to try rilly hard to blurt out the high points now.

So it would help if I could remember most of the weekend. :-> When I get tired or punchy, I tend to (a) babble and (b) only remember the barest gists of what happens. The filk documentary people (more on them later) interviewed me on 7PM on Sunday, so I was deep into this state by then. Which meant they didn't need to prompt me much (see A), but I'm also mildly apprehensive about exactly what I said (see A combined with B). :->

Upshots and the morning after

Wow, that actually turned into, y'know, a real conreport. Sort of. As much as I ever manage, anyhow. :->

I got quite a few songsheet copies all weekend that will let me happily expand my repertoire; missed out on several more, but no worries. I had nice long conversations with people I don't see much. Someone, I think museinred, said something to me this weekend that really resonates. "The good thing about filk conventions is that all your friends are there. The bad thing is that *ALL* your friends are there." So you always have what I think of as 'the Worldcon feeling': that Insanely Cool Things are happening all around you, and you only have time to do one of them at a time, therefore missing out on all the rest.

John just said as I sat down to write this that Ajax's perfect toy, according to the evidence we've seen, would be a Real Animal Bone that squeaks, is full of polyester fiberfill, and bounces erratically. And then we'd never get him in our laps again, from the sheer satisfyingness of the TOY. He got to bring home a rainbow-striped double-ended snake kind of thing from Judy's; it has a squeaker in each head and is very good for playing tug with. The squeakers, amusingly, are tuned roughly in thirds to one another (probably not intentionally by the toy manufacturer).

Footnotes

  1. o-dog-thirty is sometime between 7:30 and 8:30; used to be when Ajax woke up, got worried, and started nose-whistling in lonely/hungry/wanna-pee disconsolation. Also known as "Time to make the donuts." He's much calmer in the mornings nowadays, but he trained us to it pretty thoroughly, and we find it useful to actually get up around then, so we maintain the routine.
  2. Routes taken For completists and Eloise-Trivia hounds, we took Cicero to I-55, to 294, to 80, which then became 80/90, which we took to the Indiana tollway, exiting at I-69, which we took to I-94, Port Huron, and the border; from there we took the 402 to the 401, exiting at Dixie Road for the hotel. No, you don't care, but I might in a year or two. Move along, nothing to see. :->
  3. the Pacific Mall As seen on Martin Yan's Chinatowns! Yes, I'm a PBS junkie. So? :-> Spending hours a week watching cooking shows in my early adolescence is part of why I like to cook so much now.
  4. the land boat A 1995 Mercury Grand Marquis, black, belonging technically to my grandmother.
  5. girl suit I mostly dress pretty androgynously, but at filkcons I sometimes pull out the frippy girly crap. This particular weekend it was a black velvet cocktail dress and nylons. I realized partly through the changing process that I need to get a thin chain to hang my planet[6] on, as it compliments such an outfit perfectly.
  6. my planet elisem gave Art Warneke and I little agate beads on pendant settings in token of/recognition of the quality of our performance of his wonderful Bujold-themed song, "Rise and Strike for Barrayar". Because she's a friend of LMB's, and LMB picked out the beads at a bead show as being particularly good 'model planets' of Barrayar and Sergyar.
  7. ugly copier paper I learned the hard way that providing white paper for the copier tends to lead to abuse of the service by people using it for something other than songsheets. Therefore, I provide a moderately-disgusting color of paper. People using it for songsheets will copy cheerfully onto ANYTHING ... and it also gives me a visual census of sorts of how many folks have found it useful over the course of the weekend. It geeked me out no end to see people Saturday night and Sunday singing from salmon-pink songsheets. Made me feel useful. :->
  8. text-messaging Jo Well, technically filkerdave did, since my phone stopped working as a phone in Sarnia. Stupid Virgin mobile and their stupid Kyoceras. Sigh.
