Data Sources, Policy & Accuracy

AllJailSearch.us is built on a foundation of transparency. This page explains exactly where our data comes from, how we collect and maintain it, what our accuracy standards are, and how you can request corrections or removal.

Where Our Data Comes From

All data displayed on AllJailSearch.us is sourced from publicly available government and public-record sources. We aggregate, normalize, and present this information to make it easier to access in one place. We do not generate, fabricate, or speculate about any individual's record.

Our data falls into three main categories:

1. Prison & Facility Profiles (17,500+ facilities)

Our prison and jail facility database was manually researched and written by a team of 50+ dedicated researchers and writers. Each facility profile was built by cross-referencing the following sources:

  • State Departments of Corrections (DOC) — official inmate rosters, facility directories, and contact databases published by each state's DOC website.
  • Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP) — the federal BOP's public facility directory, inmate finder API, and press releases.
  • County Sheriff Office websites — publicly available contact details, visiting hours, and inmate rosters published by individual county sheriffs.
  • City and municipal government websites — local jail and police lockup contact pages.
  • Google Maps / business listings — publicly available location data used to verify addresses and contact numbers.
  • Direct facility verification — our research team contacts facilities directly by phone or email to verify key information such as visiting hours, phone carrier, and mailing address.

2. Inmate Records (2.65M+ records)

Our inmate database is populated from federally and state-sanctioned public inmate search tools. These sources are publicly accessible under the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) and equivalent state open-records laws. Sources include:

  • Federal Bureau of Prisons Inmate Locator — the BOP's public API, which provides inmate name, register number, facility, projected release date, and gender for all federal inmates.
  • State DOC inmate search portals — publicly accessible offender search tools maintained by each of the 50 state Departments of Corrections.
  • County jail public rosters — daily or weekly public roster exports provided by county sheriff websites and jail booking systems.

Inmate records are updated regularly from their source systems. Records reflect the data available at the time of our last sync and may not reflect transfers, releases, or new bookings in real time. Always contact the facility directly to verify current custody status.

3. Public Records — Background Check Data (58M+ records)

Our background check service searches over 1,250 public and commercial data sources, including:

  • Federal and state court filing systems
  • Arrest and booking records from law enforcement agencies
  • Property and land registry records
  • Voter registration and electoral records
  • Business registrations and corporate filings
  • Phone directory and address records
  • Publicly accessible social media profiles
  • Marriage, divorce, and vital records (where publicly available)

This service is powered by a third-party partner (TruthFinder), which is responsible for the aggregation and delivery of background check reports. AllJailSearch.us is not the record holder for background check data. See TruthFinder's own privacy policy for information about their data practices.

Legal Basis for Publishing Public Records

All information displayed on AllJailSearch.us is sourced from records that are publicly available under applicable law. The Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) and equivalent state open-records laws grant every member of the public the right to access government records, including inmate rosters, court filings, arrest records, and facility directories.

AllJailSearch.us does not claim copyright ownership over any government-generated public records. We make these records easier to search, organize, and understand — but we do not alter the underlying data.

FCRA Notice: AllJailSearch.us is not a Consumer Reporting Agency as defined by the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA). Information from this site must not be used for employment screening, tenant screening, credit decisions, or any other purpose regulated by the FCRA. For FCRA-compliant searches, we recommend a licensed consumer reporting agency such as GoodHire.

Data Accuracy & Update Frequency

We are committed to maintaining accurate, up-to-date records across all three of our data categories. Our accuracy standards by dataset:

Prison Facility Profiles

Facility profiles are reviewed by our research team on a quarterly basis or whenever we receive notice of changes. Contact details, visiting hours, and phone carrier information can change — always call the facility directly to confirm before visiting. To report an inaccuracy in a facility profile, email [email protected] with the facility name, URL, and the correction.

Inmate Records

Inmate records are synced from source systems on a regular basis. Because source systems vary in their own update frequency, our records may lag behind the source by 24 hours to 7 days. Transfers between facilities, releases, and new bookings may not be reflected immediately. Contact the facility directly at any time to confirm current custody status.

Data Removal Policy

We support every individual's right to request removal of their public record profile from AllJailSearch.us. We remove profiles within 30 days of a valid request — no documentation required, regardless of whether the case was expunged.

To submit a removal request, use the contact form on our Contact page. Do not submit removal requests by email — only form submissions are tracked and actioned.

After removal from AllJailSearch.us, cached versions of the page may persist in Google or Bing search results for up to 90 days. Use Google's own content removal tool to request de-indexing of cached pages from search engines.
