First, it is Saul’s son Ish-bosheth, who is made king in Mahanaim by his commander Abner after Saul’s death. Later, David escapes there from Absalom. Both kings cross the Jordan in a crisis situation and try to find refuge onthe East Bank, in order to regain control of all of Israel. While Ishbosheth fails and is assassinated in Mahanaim, David succeeds and can return victoriously to Jerusalem. Given that in one important tradition of the Old Testament, the Jordan is the country’s frontier, retreating or fleeing to a place onthe East Bank is astounding and requires closer scrutiny.

Die Auslegungen zu den einzelnen Psalmen entstanden zu verschiedenen Anlassen und zu verschiedenen Zeiten. Die Auslegung zu Psalm 130 (= Psalm 131 in der hebraischen Bibel) gehort zu den Auslegungen der Wallfahrtspsalmen. Augustinus legte seine eigene Ubersetzung der Psalmen der Auslegung zugrunde. Dadurch ergibt sich ein Textverstandnis, das sich vom neuzeitlichen Verstandnis deutlich unterscheidet. Augustinus stutzt sich auserdem auf antike Methoden der Schriftauslegung. The Story of the “Fall of Man” (Gn 3): Aspects of its Reception in Early Jewish Literature The st... more The Story of the “Fall of Man” (Gn 3): Aspects of its Reception in Early Jewish Literature The story of the “Fall of Man” (Gen 3) was reproduced very differently by Philo and Josephus. First, we take a look on the treatment of the theme in the Old and New Testament and some apocryphal texts. In most of the Old Testament there is silence about paradise (“Paradiesschweigen”). Where Gen 3 is received (for example Sir; ApcMos; VitAd) an interpretation prevails, which understands the “Fall of Man” as an incision in human history, even if this incision took place in a mythical past. Philo and Josephus understand Gen 3 as a didactic narrative of general nature. Josephus’s account is closer to our present understanding of the story. One can call his interpretation “moralizing”. He also places Gen 3 (as later many Christian interpreters) in the context of world history. Philo gives Gen 3 an allegorical interpretation. He relates the story to the psychic life of every single human being.

Septuagint. In any case, it turns out that the Hebrew text used by Jerome was almost, but presumably not completely,
identical to the Masoretic text known today.
