The key to facilitating honest, meaningful dialogue about cultural factors is to engage in such conversations with others outside of supervision. Receiving one's own supervision, as well as attending training, workshops, and conferences that address gender differences in professional relationships, can help supervisors target their own biases, areas of discomfort, and defensiveness on this affect-laden topic. One difficulty that plagues gender discussions is the inevitable temptation to stereotype. Indeed, some attitudes and behaviors are more characteristic of one gender group than another, but it is important not to assume that any particular set of characteristics applies to a given individual. No client or supervisee wants to be seen as representative of a class, but rather, understood for who that individual is, gender and all. In a supervisory relationship's early phase, gender should be discussed regarding cultural similarities and differences (e.g., race, age, sexual orientation, etc.) between supervisor and supervisee. In this chapter, we consider ways to repair misunderstandings that stem from traditional gender role expectations for both women and men. In our definition, a misunderstanding can either be a point of impasse arising from differing expectations for behavior or a missed understanding about how gender dynamics operate in relationships. We focus on two areas: (a) empowering female supervisees and (b) raising awareness of male gender role conflict, and we provide process models for approaching these tasks. In the decade since a web-based program showed equivalent effectiveness to traditional marriage education (Duncan et al., 2009), several fully online programs have been developed and evaluated. We reviewed nine studies of four different programs that sampled 2,000 + couples. Specifically, we rated each study's experimental rigor and compared research designs, theoretical and empirical grounding, average post-intervention and follow-up effect sizes, and differential effectiveness. Across studies, measured outcomes included relational (improved satisfaction, quality, confidence, commitment, communication; reduced conflict and aggression) and individual functioning on various indices of mental and physical health, emotional expression, and quality of life. Finally, we discuss the strengths and limitations of the research evidence, describe the two most evidence-based programs (ePREP and OurRelationship) in some detail and make recommendations for future study of these promising kinds of interventions.

In Study 1, carried out with 1445 subjects, exploratory factor analysis was performed with one half of the participants, and confirmatory factor analysis with the other, comparing the five-factor and bifactor models. In Study 2, examining convergent validity, 180 subjects participated and completed the revised scale and the Differentiation of Self Inventory-Revised. Studies 3 and 4 verified concurrent validity, with 401 subjects completing the DSS-R and the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory in Study 3, and 170 subjects completing the DSS-R and the Couple Assertion Questionnaire in Study 4. Adequate internal consistency indices and evidence of construct, convergent and con...
