This study examines the political implications of women’s participation in social movements in Th... more This study examines the political implications of women’s participation in social movements in Thailand. Based on interviews at protest sites and focus group discussions with movement participants as well as interviews with leaders and key informants, the study suggests that political socialization within what is commonly called the color-coded movements has resulted in women acquiring political knowledge and learning about political engagement while being increasingly accepted as competent political actors. Consequently, women have utilized the Red and Yellow Shirt movements to increase their engagement in politics in three different ways. First, women form groups to enhance their political roles and opportunities within the movements. Second, women are expanding their political roles beyond those offered by the color-coded movements by becoming informal representatives, bridging their communities with formal political agents and institutions. In our call for this 25th anniversary special issue we stated that “a reasonable, and epistemolog... more In our call for this 25th anniversary special issue we stated that “a reasonable, and epistemological, basis to begin with would be to question the central tenets of the journal, namely the separate and combined meanings of gender, technology and development.” This questioning is partly about understanding the emancipatory potential of development and technology, or of their interlinkages. However, as important as these connections are the editors never assumed a symbiotic and positive relationship, i.e., one in which development and technological changes would necessarily lead to greater gender equality and empowerment for women and sexual/gender minorities, or one in which techno-positivist were made about the relationship between technology and development.

The aging population represents enormous challenges in supporting the elderly’s needs in terms of living environment and well-being. Providing community facilities and services that foster healthy aging in urban residential areas ensures that older adults feel comfortable aging in their homes or communities. Therefore, this research study includes a comprehensive assessment of the needs of elderly people that used community facilities and services using a focus group interview, a site investigation, and a questionnaire survey in five urban housing projects in Bangkok. The study reveals that the need for community facilities and services, such as green spaces, safety facilities, and medical services, was prioritized by the majority of elderly respondents, especially those who were ambulant and active. In the last few decades, attention on and analysis of women in fisheries and aquaculture have changed tremendously, especially in Southeast Asia. Bu enfeksiyonlardan sıklıkla impetigo, folikülit, fronkül, karbonkül, sellülit ile karşılaşmaktayız. Etken olarak da sıklıkla, ciltte bulunan stafilokok ve streptokok cinsi gram pozitif mikroorganizmaları görmekteyiz. Bu enfeksiyonların tedavisi hastanın kliniğine göre değişmekle birlikte genellikle topikal/sistemik antibiyotiklerle sağlanmaktadır. Bu olguların sağlık kurumlarına ilk başvuruları sırasında tanı alması, tedavilerinin doğru ve etkin planlanması, gelişebilecek komplikasyonların önlenmesi ve gereksiz hastane yatışlarının önüne geçilmesi bakımından aile hekimlerine önemli bir görev düşmektedir. Foundation for a two-year pilot initiative aimed at strengthening and redirecting Asian studies. ... more Foundation for a two-year pilot initiative aimed at strengthening and redirecting Asian studies. Its longterm scholarly objective is to frame the contours of global knowledge about Asia "after area studies," linking emerging fields and scholars through real and virtual spaces of engagement and interaction, enabling them to identify new ways to link disciplines with deep area knowledge and language competence while drawing on technology to create new global sites for networking among Asian studies scholars. Within this programme, the Institute of East Asian Studies (IAO-ENS Lyon) is in charge of the Forum "Asian Spatialities 3: Across Southeast Asian Borderlands" that will challenge the artificial boundaries dividing Asia. These divisions not only mask the varied commonalities that transcend such boundaries, they also reinforce the marginalization of people who live in the so-called border areas. Yet, a better appreciation of these "transitional zones" is critical to our understanding of processes of social and cultural changes in the states lying beyond them, a focus that remains peripheral to traditional "area" studies. This is particularly true of the so-called region of Southeast Asia, squeezed between two predominant regions dominated by India and China, which appears to have been the poor relative of Asian studies over the past decades. Recent economic and geopolitical developments associated with the growth of China have revived long-standing linkages and created new forms of connections across the "Southeast Asian region" in both its maritime and continental configurations, thereby renewing scholarly and political interest for this area. For the first workshop of this Forum, "Communities in Between: Redefining Social Spaces in Southeast Asian Borderlands," we are delighted to welcome outstanding scholars from all over the world to provoke thoughts on how to "rethink Southeast Asia". Our wish is to consolidate a transnational network of academic institutions and scholars capable of challenging the standard boundaries of the field by generating new paradigms and methodologies that go beyond geographical and disciplinary barriers. This two-day workshop will not only be an opportunity to share our respective work, but also to brainstorm and to open critical dialogue on the new contours of Southeast Asian studies. Tachilek, a border town, attracted migrants from all over Myanmar after trade with Thailand was o... more Tachilek, a border town, attracted migrants from all over Myanmar after trade with Thailand was opened in 1988-89. Based on testimonies of six Burman migrants in Tachilek and their families in Sae Doe village in the interior, this study investigated the importance of locale upon the extent of social and political control over people’s movement and behaviour, and their resistances to it. Tachilek provided relatively greater freedom for women with respect to their activities and behaviour. However, a gossip network linked Tachilek and Sae Doe village. Hence, they were not wholly unconstrained by the norms of their home community. This gossip network also allowed elders in Sae Doe village to perceive the border town as a space under their control allowing young women to go to Tachilek. At the same time, migrant women brought back economic power and experience that increased their influence in the native village. A case study of two well-established groups practicing OTOP is used to contrast the means by which economic success can be achieved through and also highlights the different motivations which women might have when approaching such a Community-Based Rural Enterprise. It is noted that OTOP works much better in terms of rewarding profitable groups rather than those more interested in fostering community solidarity, self-help and women’s empowerment as part of the human economy.
The study examined livelihood changes in eight villages in Luang Namtha province of northern Lao ... more The study examined livelihood changes in eight villages in Luang Namtha province of northern Lao PDR following the expansion in rubber plantations and analyzed its impact on gender roles and relations. All study villages are engaged in rubber production, but the impact is shaped by the context and history of the particular location. The study has demonstrated the importance of feminist political ecologist approach in analyzing the conjuncture and intersectionality, as well as the location that shapes these conditions to better understand the gendered impact of the introduction of rubber production. The concept of social interface has helped us to identify the shock that women and men face and the changes in access to resources as a result of the shock and the agencies that the people exercised.
