Bretonnian Trebuchet

Now with the Skaven out of the way it’s time to publish one or two bits and pieces that I completed earlier in the year, but which I never got around to photographing.

First up we have this Bretonnian Trebuchet.

I recall having some problems assembling this one as a couple of the longer pieces had become bent. The metal was particularly soft, so I simply bent the pieces back in to shape.

The machine itself is a bit ugly, but then I guess the real thing would have been too. The crew are also a pretty hideous bunch, but that’s a good thing. Peasants are supposed to be grimy looking and these certainly are. They are comfortably my favourite models in the Bretonnian range (I still consider the Green Knight a wood elf).

More Skaven. Is there no end to them?

Along with the Island of Blood Skaven I’ve recently finished I painted a number of other Skaven that I’ve had laying around for some time.

The figures are a mixture of plastics and some very old metals. Including 17 metal slaves. These are probably some of the best Skaven figures ever, lovely to paint and quick too. They are armed with an assortment of weapons, mostly hand weapons/halberds, but half of this batch have slings. Not that I’ve ever fielded them armed with slings.

Now, compare and contrast the delightful metal slaves with these plastic night runners which I use as gutter runners.

They matched the plastic clanrat models which were available at the time, but look very strange nowadays. The old slave models fit in nicely with the current range, but I’m not so sure about these.

I think it’s the overly large hands that are the problem.

That’s 17 slaves and 16 night runners for my total and there’s still some more Skaven finished which I’ll post later.

Return to the Island of Blood

The rest of the Skaven in the Island of Blood set are almost complete. Only the Chieften / Warlord figure remains to be completed, so I’ll post some photographs of the others.

First up we have the Engineer. A great figure, with lots of lovely equipment.

Sadly none of it is the sort of equipment players give their Skaven Engineers these days, but the same is true of the old metal engineers.

I just wish they did one with items that could pass for Doom Rockets and Brass Orbs.

Also in the boxed set are two lovely weapon teams. A Plague Wind Mortar and a Warpfire Thrower.

I also painted an old Warpfire Thrower for comparison. As you can see it’s not too bad a match, although it has a “chunkier” look and feel to it.

Also painted at the same time was a old metal Ratling Gun. Pictured here side by side with the Island of Blood teams. Again a pretty good match in both size and style.

Back in the game . . .

. . . I hope so. Four months without an update is simply too long. The truth is that there has been very little to report though. I’m not really sure why, but I’ve not been in the right mood to paint much recently. Although I’ve still been buying figures 😦

I’ve not been completely idle, although I’ve been picking at old projects rather that finishing them. Recently though I’ve started to get back in to the swing of things, working mostly at getting some Khador jacks finished. It’s been heavy going though. Perhaps a white/red paint scheme wasn’t the most sensible choice. They’d certainly have been finished by now had I gone for the all red scheme that is the most common one you see. You can expect pictures for these over the next month or so as and when I varnish them.

Whilst working on the Khador I’ve not ignored my Cygnar completely. I’ve finished a couple of extra casters and there’s a pair of jacks drying on the varnish table as I type this. Both casters are Haley. First up her “Prime” incarnation.

Followed by here “Epic” version. As you can see I haven’t used the full cloak extension. Due to a slight miscast I had a terrible time trying to assemble the thing properly and finally decided not to bother. She looks fine without it.

So only two figures finished opposed to a couple of hundred bought puts me back in the hole for my 2010 pledge.

Jagerhunds & Werewolves

It’s unlikely that I’ll get much more painting done this year, so my “Pledge” is doomed to failure. However, I press on regardless to see how much I can actually finish.

Today’s update is seven figures from Westwind Games Secrets of the third Reich range. Three Jagerhunds and four Werewolves.

Brainwurst! – Americans

Another update and another batch of figures for Secrets of the Third Reich from Westwind games. This time it’s the 12 American figures from the Brainwurst set.

How did I miss that mould line?

Warfare saw a few more figures added to my stockpile, although I was restrained and kept the number to 10, and one of those was the freebie that came with the new Doomsday source book for Secrets of the Third Reich. I’ve not had a chance to more than glance at the book, but my first impression is a good one, even if it will no doubt lead to more purchases in future.

Still the Brainwurst figures add another 12 painted, and with the 10 purchased, that makes my score for the year:

Even more Soviets

Here are some pictures of my final batch of Secrets of the Third Reich Soviets (for the time being – with Warfare coming up at the weekend there’s every chance I’ll buy some more).

First up is one of the special characters: Sickle. There’s a corresponding “Hammer”, but he’s having some bits and pieces pinned on at the moment.

Girls with Guns

Not all defenders of the Motherland are shambling Zombies. Soviet women bear their share of the burden in Great Patriotic War against the Evil German Undead Warmachine. While most toil in industry, transport, agriculture and other civilian roles, working double shifts to free up enlisted men to fight and increase military production, a sizable number of women take up arms to deal with the hated invaders more directly.

A shining example is Nika the Widowmaker.

But not all female defenders of the Motherland are snipers. Women of the Soviet Union can also be found wielding the famous PTRD Anti-tank rifle.

The Army of the Dead

At last some painting progress to report!

First up we have some War of the Rings: Army of the Dead figures. There’s 30 of these bad boys, a mixture of the old metal models and the funky new plastic ones. To my mind there was nothing wrong with the old metal ones, but I’ve got to admit the new plastic ones are even better.

Once again a simple paint job.

Black undercoat.
Shadow Grey drybrushed – heavier at the top than bottom
Codex Grey drybrushed (top 80% of model) – heavier at the top than bottom
Fortress Grey drybrushed (top 60% of model) – heavier at the top than bottom
Skull White drybrushed (top 30% of model) – heavier at the top than bottom
Thraka Green wash

Leave for at least a week, before applying matt varnish, and you’re good to go.

Eastern Front Flames of War

Still no progress on the camera front, so this time I’ll have to settle for a couple of “action” shots of my East Front Germans (MidWar). Apologies for the quality, but they were taken “in game” and the lighting wasn’t the best.

First up we have a PzIVF1 – long barreled

Next we have the PzIVF2. Very useful for digging out infantry. You can just make out the PzIVF1 in the background.

I don’t really play Flames of War any more, which is a shame because I did really enjoy the game when I first started playing. The Late War stuff leaves me a little cold though, as it tends to be a little dull to play.

I’ve still quite a bit of unpainted Flames figures, so perhaps I should try and rekindle my interest, although more things to paint is the last thing I need at the moment.

Painting update:

The varnishing backlog continues to build up with 42 Haradrim Bowmen joining the queue. I’m going to try and get them all done at once, hopefully at the weekend.

Once they are all done it will be a huge plus towards my “Pledge” progress – not that I have any realistic expectation of succeeding this year after making more purchases at Derby.

Never one to turn down a bargain I picked up:
