Adobe Shockwave Player + Authorware Web Player, developed by Adobe Systems, Inc., is a legacy set of browser plug-ins that enabled interactive multimedia experiences on the web. Shockwave Player rendered content created with Adobe Director, including games, simulations, interactive presentations, and Shockwave 3D. Authorware Web Player delivered e-learning courseware and interactive training modules authored in Adobe Authorware. Together, they allowed rich, keyboard- and mouse-driven content with audio, video, animation, and external asset loading to run inside compatible Windows and macOS browsers via NPAPI or ActiveX.
These players were widely used across education, corporate training, and entertainment from the late 1990s through the mid-2000s. However, Adobe discontinued Authorware in 2007 and ended support for Shockwave Player in 2019. The plug-ins are no longer maintained, are incompatible with modern browsers, and pose security risks if installed on current systems. Today, they are relevant only for accessing legacy Director or Authorware content on controlled, older environments.
