The Information Systems Academic Discipline in Australia, 2008

It reports on the ways in which Victorian universities are addressing the challenges associated with reducing local and international student demand, and hence enrolments, at a time when IS in particular and information and communications technology (ICT) in general are seen by the business sector as necessary components contributing to organisational success. Transcripts of interviews with 14 academics at nine universities throughout Victoria are analysed to give a current profile of IS programs and identify the trends in their development over time. First, a profile of the state of Victoria, its education system and its ICT industry is provided to place this work in context. Next, the interview sample is described and a number of relevant topics of interest are identified and discussed, comparing and contrasting the various programs. Third, a summary of the findings is provided in light of the framework used to guide the larger study of the Australian IS programs, which includes an assessment of the impact of mechanisms of control and the core body of knowledge on research and teaching methods and standards, key research and teaching IS topics and laws, and rules and guidelines used within the IS programs. Finally, the relationship between the impact of local contingencies and the degree of professionalism is examined.

We reviewed literature on ABC and TDABC relating to selected Asia Pacific countries from 42 academic and professional journals published in the period 1987-2012. Our fi ndings show substantial divergence in ABC implementation rates. In this study, we have not identified any research on TDABC in Asia Pacific countries that has been published. Opportunities exist for more extensive studies of ABC and TDABC that take account of Asia Pacific national cultures.

Articles were identified using the ABI/INFORM database. Our findings provide added evidence to the paucity of ABC research in the Asia Pacific countries in general. It is also interesting to note that no research focused on TDABC was conducted. Current state of ABC and TDABC research provides the impetus for more extensive studies that also integrate the local culture. This paper provides an updated review of the state of ABC research in selected countries by bringing together relevant research into ABC, and thus provides foundation for further studies

This research investigates the CSFs for project management using a quantitative approach. Five CSFs for project management were identified through a systematic literature review for this study. A survey study was conducted among information technology (IT) professionals from 50 projects conducted in 20 companies in the banking and finance sectors. On the basis of the results using factor analysis, the dimensions relating to the success factors for project management were determined. In addition, by using regression analysis, this study identified four significant factors relating to project success in information system (IS) project management.

Through a review of the extant literature, key service costing issues are identified and discussed. Despite the importance of the service sector as reflected in its growing contribution to the gross domestic product of many developed nations worldwide, this study demonstrates that the long-standing problems associated with service costing appear to remain unfathomed and unresolved. This study may provide a better understanding of the challenges associated with service costing for both practising management accountants and members of academia. Deficiencies in the literature are pinpointed. This paper represents the first attempt to synthesise the currently fragmented literature on service costing, and as such, it is hoped that it will provide a platform for researchers wishing to undertake further research in service costing.

Regardless of whether the integration occurs in an E-Business or E-Government Service Delivery context, stakeholder relationships and the management strategies based on those relationships are likely to have a major impact on implementation outcomes. Consequently IS practitioners would be expected to

Businesses worldwide have been using eLearning as a facilitator in organisational development through knowledge sharing, especially in the area of web based training and project management. eLearning has also become a large area of potential business for many organisations. In this study, we explore how eLearning has helped an organisation based in India-Tata

New types of businesses are evolving within this New Economy and, with them, new business models (or modified versions of traditional business models) are being created to cater for the new business activities and new transactions which are taking place. Education, too, is undergoing significant changes. The increasing demand for skilled and experienced I.T. people with both technical and creative skills has combined with an already serious pre-existing shortage of staff having such qualifications to produce an almost insatiable demand for training at all levels-postgraduate , undergraduate and technical. Universities, many of which are in any case under pressure to bring in industry funding to fill the gap left by lower levels of government support, are responding by developing specialist subjects, degrees and diplomas at undergraduate and, particularly, at graduate level. The rate of development and the reactive nature of many of these offerings, however, suggest that what is occurring is not so much an exercise in pedagogy as a marketing activity.

Universities offered new programs to attract students, and hence a model for such offering became essential. New Educational Service Product Offerings (NESPO) model, derived based on some new service product models, was developed for this purpose. In this paper, we examine how universities have made use of the service distribution concept-one of new service product concepts in the NESPO, for offering their eBusiness educational programs in the AP region for the period 2000-2003. The findings suggest that eBusiness degree program developers would benefit from taking a more market-focused view of their new offerings.

Offering new academic programs which will attract increasing student numbers is ever more important to universities and this, in turn, requires a greater awareness of market needs and the positioning of educational offerings. A theory-based study of the literature on new service products led to the development of the New Educational Service Product Offerings (NESPO) model for universities offering such multidisciplinary, niche-focused degree programs, which forms the basis of the research project reported here. This paper begins by considering the literary foundations of the model. Using a multiple case study of eBusiness programs in the Asia-Pacific region over the period 2000-2003, it then analyses the findings of the cases, determining whether the universities surveyed were making use of the concepts of new service product development in developing their eBusiness educational programs. Finally, the paper considers whether (and to what extent) these findings are applicable more widely to a range of niche-market, multidisciplinary degree programs.

In this paper, we explore the research domains in RFID technology, innovation and diffusion theory, and supply chain management within the existing literature for exploring whether RFID enhances supply chain competence and ebusiness. This paper also forms a preliminary study base for researchers who may wish to carry on future research in this area.

Traditional offerings in technology areas, such as Information Systems and Information Technology are being augmented by newer, more marketable degrees in areas such as eCommerce/eBusiness. This paper analyses the eCommerce/eBusiness and Information Systems (IS) / Information Technology (IT) academic programs in Australian and New Zealand universities on the basis of Kotler and Fox's service offering model of educational institutions; and considers what differences exist between these two apparently similar areas of academic endeavour. Finally we look at the trends of academic program delivery in the e-age and question whether universities need to take a more consumer-product approach to the issue of attracting appropriate students.

Stakeholders within the digital supply chain are struggling to re-conceptualise the book as artefact (Esposito 2003). Academic and scholarly libraries are at the forefront of these changes and many are preparing for a significant shift from physical to electronic material presentation within the next few year. Within this context, we review some recent developments in the technology underpinning e-books, evaluate a number of e-business publishing models and introduce some of the key players.
