SUMMARY
I am a Critical Care Paramedic with 14 years of on-road experience. I’ve taught paramedicine at the service, College and University level for over 15 years on three continents, including for eight years in the Middle East, where I authored and led the program. I’ve worked as a Senior Manager for a state-wide ambulance service and am currently a Senior Lecturer in, and the Course Coordinator for, the Bachelor of Paramedicine degree at Australian Catholic University in Brisbane. I have an undergraduate in paramedicine, a master’s degree in counselling psychology and am a candidate for a PhD in Medicine.
TEACHING
My teaching experience is extensive. In addition to being a Field Training Officer for Toronto EMS, I have taught for the Sunnybrook Base Hospital Program Flight Academy in Toronto and both taught, and did course development, for the Advanced Care Paramedic program at the Michener Institute in Toronto. For five years I was an Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) Instructor for the Sunnybrook Hospital ACLS program and became their first non-physician Course Director. I created the ACLS program for Humber College, was its first Course Director, and I sat on the Paramedic Program Advisory Board for Georgian College, in Ontario, helping to create its Primary Care Paramedic program. I worked for seven years as a full time Paramedic Instructor for the College of the North Atlantic - Qatar, which is a Canadian college teaching the Primary Care Paramedic program in the Middle East. There I authored a complete revision of the paramedic program, which made it a joint US EMT-Intermediate and Canadian Primary Care Paramedic program. I came to Australia and worked for two years in Paramedic Unit, School of Medicine, at Flinders University in Adelaide Australia as a Lecturer. In 2014 I began teaching paramedicine for Australian Catholic University. My areas of interest are 12 lead ECGs and Advanced Airway. I have a YouTube channel for paramedic tutorials with over 400 subscribers.
ACADEMIC
Academically, I have completed a Teaching and Training Adult Certificate from Georgian College and have completed a Bachelor of Health Sciences degree in Pre-Hospital Care from Charles Sturt University. My post-graduate education is a Master of Arts in Counselling Psychology with Yorkville University in Canada. I am vocationally qualified as a Canadian Critical Care Paramedic. I am also a candidate for a PhD in Medicine through the Joanna Briggs Institute at the University of Adelaide. The focus of my PhD is on clinical practice guidelines for paramedics.
CLINICAL
Clinically, I am a Canadian Paramedic with over 13 years of road experience in the city of Toronto. I have worked as an Emergency Medical Attendant (4 yrs), Advanced care Paramedic (4 yrs), and as a Critical Care Paramedic (5 yrs). Canadian Critical Care Paramedics would be considered clinically equivalent to Australian Retrievalist Practitioners. In addition to working for the City of Toronto I have experience working part-time as a private industrial paramedic and a flight paramedic repatriating Canadians. I was a clinically registered paramedic in the Middle East (Qatar).
LEADERSHIP
I am currently the Course Coordinator of the Bachelor of Paramedicine degree at Australian Catholic University in Brisbane where I am responsible for guiding the over 100 students currently undertaking the degree.
From 2012 to the end of 2013 I was the General Manager of Clinical Governance for South Australia Ambulance Service (SAAS). SAAS is a government agency under SA Health, which is the sole provider of emergency ambulance transport, clinical care and patient transport services to over 1.5 million residents of SA. In this Senior Management role I was responsible for assuring the quality of clinical practice for the >1000 paramedics and >1500 volunteers within the service.
I am currently directing a project for Paramedics Australia, organising the development of a national set of educational paramedic Clinical Practice Guidelines.
