The current study examines the antimicrobial and antioxidant properties of different extracts of ... more The current study examines the antimicrobial and antioxidant properties of different extracts of the microalga Dunaliella salina Teodoresco (Dunaliellaceae), their fatty acid composition and the antimicrobial activity of the oil. Antimicrobial and antioxidant activities were evaluated by obtaining extracts of D. salina in n-hexane, dichloromethane, ethanol, and methanol. To evaluate the antimicrobial activity, the extracts, and fatty acids from D. salina were assessed by the disc diffusion and microdilution techniques against pathogenic microorganisms including fish and clinical/food-borne. The MBC or MFC values of the extracts and fatty acids ranged from 0.63 to 10.00 mg/ml. The antioxidant activity was studied by phosphomolybdenum and DPPH assays and ß-carotene/linoleic acid tests. In addition, the total phenolic and flavonoid contents were evaluated and the fatty acid composition was determined using gas chromatography. Hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) is commonly identified acutely toxic, a proven mutagen and carcinoge... more Hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) is commonly identified acutely toxic, a proven mutagen and carcinogen heavy metal pollutant in the aquatic environment, whereas Cr(III) is believed to be an essential element. In the present study, we show that palladium(0) nanoparticles supported on 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTS) functionalized silica (Pd@SiO 2 -NH 2 ) effectively catalyze the reduction of Cr(VI) to Cr(III) by using formic acid (HCOOH) as reducing agent under mild conditions (at room temperature under air). Pd@SiO 2 -NH 2 catalyst was reproducibly prepared by deposition-reduction technique and characterized by the combination of various spectroscopic tools including ICP-OES, P-XRD, DR/UV-vis, XPS, BFTEM, HRTEM and TEM-EDX techniques. The sum of their results is indicative of the formation of well-dispersed palladium(0) nanoparticles (d mean = 3.7 nm) on the surface of APTS-functionalized SiO 2 . The catalytic performance of the resulting palladium(0) nanoparticles in terms of activity and stability was evaluated by the catalytic reduction of Cr(VI) to Cr(III) in aqueous solution in the presence of formic acid as a reducing agent. Our results reveal that Pd@SiO 2 -NH 2 catalyst displays unprecedented activity (TOF = 258 mol Cr 2 O 7 2− /mol Pd min) and reusability (<85% at 5th reuse) for the reduction of Cr(VI) to Cr(III) at room temperature. The present study reported here also includes the compilation of wealthy kinetic data for Pd@SiO 2 -NH 2 catalyzed the reduction of Cr(VI) to Cr(III) in aqueous formic acid (HCOOH)-sodium formate HCOONa) solution depending on substrate [Cr 2 O 7 2− ], catalyst [Pd@SiO 2 -NH 2 ], surface grafted amine [APTS], formic acid [HCOOH], sodium formate [HCOONa]

ABSTRACT Herein, we report the development of a new and cost-effective nanocatalyst for the hydro... more ABSTRACT Herein, we report the development of a new and cost-effective nanocatalyst for the hydrolytic dehydrogenation of ammonia-borane (NH3BH3), which is considered to be one of the most promising solid hydrogen carriers due to its high gravimetric hydrogen storage capacity (19.6 wt%) and low molecular weight. The new catalyst system consisting of bimetallic copper-cobalt alloy nanoparticles supported on activated carbon was simply and reproducibly prepared by surfactant-free deposition-reduction technique at room temperature. The characterization of this new catalytic material was done by the combination of multi-pronged techniques including ICP-MS, XRD, XPS, BFTEM, HR-TEM, STEM and HAADF-STEM-line analysis. The sum of their results revealed that the formation of copper-cobalt alloy nanoparticles (dmean = 1.8 nm) on the surface of activated carbon (CuCo/C). These new carbon supported copper-cobalt alloy nanoparticles act as highly active catalyst in the hydrolytic dehydrogenation of ammonia-borane, providing an initial turnover frequency of TOF = 2700 h−1 at 298 K, which is not only higher than all the non-noble metal catalysts but also higher than the majority of the noble metal based homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysts employed in the same reaction. More importantly, easy recovery and high durability of these supported CuCo nanoparticles make CuCo/C recyclable heterogeneous catalyst for the hydrolytic dehydrogenation of ammonia-borane. They retain almost their inherent activity even at 10th catalytic reuse in the hydrolytic dehydrogenation of ammonia-borane at 298 K.

Furthermore, their excellent catalytic stability makes them isolable and reusable heterogeneous catalysts in the formic acid dehydrogenation.

Here, we selected the three most common wasp species belonging to the family Vespidae for chitin extraction and characterization. Chitin was isolated from each wasp species and characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), X-ray diffractometry (XRD), elemental analysis (EA), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The chitin contents of Vespa crabro, Vespa orientalis, and Vespula germanica were 8.3, 6.4, and 11.9%, respectively. The crystalline index (CrI) values for the chitin extracted from each species were 69.88, 53.92, and 50%, respectively. The most important finding of the study is that although the same method was used to extract chitin from each of the three wasp species, the degree of acetylation was different: for V. crabro and V. orientalis it was 96.85 and 99.82% (the chitin was extremely pure), respectively, whereas that for V. germanica the chitin was ...

A new method for fast chitin extraction from shells of crab, crayfish and shrimp

A new method for quick chitin isolation from the shells of crab, crayfish and shrimp is described... more A new method for quick chitin isolation from the shells of crab, crayfish and shrimp is described. The main difference between the new method and the conventional method is two sodium hypochlorite (NaClO) treatments for 10 min each before the processes of demineralisation and deproteinisation. After the NaClO treatment, only 15 min is adequate for the demineralisation and 20 min for the deproteinisation processes. Newly extracted chitin from crab, crayfish and shrimp shells and commercial chitin were characterised using FT-IR, TGA, X-ray diffractometry and elemental analysis. From the results, it was observed that the chitins isolated with the new method and the commercial chitin had almost the same physicochemical properties. The advantage of the new method compared to traditional methods is the relatively rapid chitin extraction. When compared to the traditional chitin extraction method, the proposed method appears to be promising regarding its time and energy saving nature.
