Nigeria, ‘The Giant of Africa’, is no exception and has recently surpassed South Africa as the continent’s largest economy. Along with historical challenges the country has faced, such as corruption and lack of governmental transparency, rapid urbanization brings a new set of issues to the fore. This paper explores alternative governance models in developing nations against the backdrop of rapid urbanization and the growth of informal structures. Roughly two-third of Africa's urban population live in informal, over-crowded settlements, and two-fifths live below the poverty line. Informal employment accounts for roughly 60 percent of urban jobs. Експедиції В пошуках петрофітної рослинності навколо Висуні На початку травня стартувала комплекс... more Експедиції В пошуках петрофітної рослинності навколо Висуні На початку травня стартувала комплексна експедиція навколо долини річки Висунь (притока Інгульця) для вивчення петрофітної рослинності, що трапляється на відслоненнях вапняків, мергелів та подекуди гранітів. В експедиції брали участь академік Яків Дідух, професор Олександр Ходосовцев, доцент Юлія Вашеняк та аспірант Валерій Дармостук. Долина річки, яка має довжину 198 км, не має вираженої терасованої структури. Її схили дуже пологі, подекуди сильно еродовані та мають подекуди відслонення осадових порід та кристалічних порід. У верхній течії Висунь протікає через пласт гранітів, який лежить на поверхні, проте цей ландшафтний комплекс можна спостерігати лише в одному локалітеті-біля села Новоданилівка Казанківського району Миколаївської області. Нижче по течії Висунь місцями ховається під землю і лише біля села Скобелеве різко повертає на схід, залишаючи по берегах та балках відслонення вапняків у вигляді дрібних камінців, які продовжуються до самого місця впадіння річки в Інгулець. Однак ми не обмежувалися лише степовими ділянками навколо Висуні, об'єктом дослідження виступали також і степові схили Інгульця. Нами були також досліджені природні біотопи степових схилів загубленої серед агроландшафтів степової річки Боковеньки. Степові схили Висуні біля села Веселий Кут Березнегуватського району Миколаївської області (7 травня 2019 року).

place, full of hustle and bustle, full of people, energy,
diversity, and creativity—most especially in its
long-established neighborhoods and districts like
Lagos Island or the numerous low-income areas
like Mushin, Makoko or Agege, where much of life
is interrogated and staged in the streets. Lagos is
also a divided city. The division line runs along the
rich and the poor, like in many developing regions.
However, all Lagosians share the constant struggle
that everyday life imposes on them. “Did you have
electricity last night?” is a common conversation
starter in Lagos.
an autarkic and vibrant, still peaceful community
on water within an ever busy, noisy and hectic
Megacity. Although the lack of government support
and infrastructure result in poor living conditions, the
communal life offers exemplary potentials to adapt
to rapid urbanisation and climate change in coastal
cities. The “Makoko/Iwaya Waterfront Regeneration
Plan” - a comprehensive people-centered development
framework – was submitted to the Ministry of Physical
Planning in October 2013. One of the major objectives
is ensuring participation and community ownership in
the formulation, implementation and sustainability of
the plan. It looks at all facets of life and development in
Makoko-Iwaya Waterfront including land use, housing,
tourism opportunities, tenure security, funding strategies
and an institutional framework for implementation and
management.
The idea of the Regeneration Plan centers on the
assumption that upgrading of infrastructure and the
transformation of the communities can only succeed if
its residents are empowered to contribute with their own
funds. This brochure gives you an idea of the identified
potential for economic empowerment as an integral
part of the Regeneration Plan. Supported by a working
group with members of the communities, professionals,
academicians and human rights organizations, Fabulous
Urban developed the concept of “Decentralized
Neighborhood Hotspots” powered by biogas facilities
which offer a wide range of micro-entrepreneurial
opportunities for a resource-based economy. The
income will be sufficient to pay each worker an
appropriate salary and still save money in a fund for the
general maintenance of the facility so that it can be selfsustainable.
“Opportunity Cards” describe and visualize
these job potentials with a cost/benefit analysis for
necessary financial investments which, if implemented
within the framework of the Regeneration Plan through
concerted efforts from society, government and the
communities, could turn the Makoko/Iwaya Waterfront
communities into a worldwide showcase of a sustainable
and flood-resilient lifestyle.
