About the program

The program is designed for future developers who can fast-track to mid-level and senior positions.

The program first launched in 1991 when Prof. Vladimir Vasilyev and Prof. Vladimir Parfenov established the Computer Technology Department at ITMO – one of Russia’s pioneering departments in IT. In 2000, the Information Technologies and Programming Faculty – a future research and educational leader in programming and software – was opened on the foundation laid by the department. Among the faculty’s outstanding achievements are its exceptional performance in competitive programming, as well as the invention of the programming language Kotlin. The faculty’s students won the title of world ICPC champions seven times. ITMO graduates Andrey Breslav and Roman Elizarov led the development team behind Kotlin. Among the faculty’s graduates was also Gennady Korotkevich, the legend of competitive programming.

During their studies, students will work on and defend projects based on real-world business cases. Senior students are free to choose their future specialization and courses to form their own individual learning track.

Big Tech leaders – Yandex, VK, Sberbank, Alfa-Bank, T-Bank, Avito, and others – offer specialized training for students, including courses, internships, employment opportunities for third- and fourth-years, and stipends.

It’s beyond hard to make a career choice when you’re only 17. I believe your job should bring joy and fulfillment first and material benefits second. I’m a lucky person: I get to do what I love and see the results of my work. I like to solve challenges as they emerge and get to the bottom of processes that I have control over. What I have learned at ITMO helps me avoid lots of typical mistakes that I could make along the way.

FAQ

How are the student groups formed?
At the beginning of training, all students are split into several (usually 6-8) groups according to their background experience. By the end of the third year, all students are expected to display a similar level of expertise. On your first day, you will take an entrance test to determine which group suits you best. The test includes tasks in mathematics, computer science, and programming.

Do I need a laptop for my studies? If so, what kind of specs should it have?
Although you can study without a laptop, having one will make it much easier for you to do your assignments. We recommend using a laptop with 8GB of RAM, 256GB of SSD storage; you won’t require a discrete graphics card unless you also plan on using it for gaming. The lighter the laptop, the easier it will be to bring it with you to the university – and you will need it quite often. Your laptop should also have a powerful battery, as you won’t always have access to a power socket.

Does the program include classes on competitive programming?
No. However, Gennady Korotkevich, a world-famous programmer and multiple-time international contest winner, delivers lectures and workshops on competitive programming for those who are interested in the subject.

Should I learn Linux beforehand?
No. First and foremost, most tasks you will encounter can be done on Windows. In addition, during your first semester you’ll have a course on digital culture that covers master terminals, Bash, version control systems, and other useful tools.

Should I brush up on my algorithm skills?
If you’re applying for this program, you’re likely to have at least some experience with programming, but if you don’t, you can start by developing something rather simple, like a binary search in Java. A basic knowledge of programming is enough.
