As autonomous ships are currently developed, modern technologies are implemented into ship system... more As autonomous ships are currently developed, modern technologies are implemented into ship systems for enabling autonomous operations. Tight coupling in safety-critical systems created new challenges for the engineers and operators. Designing, operating and analyzing these complex systems requires a deep understanding about the system composition, requirements and expected behavior or functionality. The increasing complexity of the systems requires the implementation of modern model-based approaches. Instead of large texts, these new modelling techniques aim to present detailed system information with simplified models. This paper compares system modelling techniques known as System Modelling Language (SysML) and Object Process Methodology (OPM). These methods are used to model a Dynamic Positioning system (DP-system). Results show that the SysML is more suitable than OPM for modelling the autonomous ship systems due to its ability to present detailed system information in a simple and coherent way.

Marine industry is leaning towards the autonomous vessels; and advanced technologies are being de... more Marine industry is leaning towards the autonomous vessels; and advanced technologies are being developed for autonomous operations. However, this rapid technological change has increased the level of complexity in ship systems. As the interactions between components are increasing further and software are getting imbedded into components, the nature of risks in modern systems can be different than in the traditional systems; where the risks were mostly limited to human errors and component failures. However, for identifying risks in modern systems, it is first important to understand the system composition and the behavior of components. Since traditional system-safety engineering techniques, developed for the relatively simpler systems in past, are still dominant in marine industry. These techniques may not be able to cope with the risks due to increasing complexity. This paper reviews and identifies a suitable modelling approach and a risk analysis method for a complex ship system. A modern modeling approach known as Systems-Modeling Language (SysML) and a modern risk analysis method known as Systems-Theoretical Process Analysis (STPA) are reviewed and compared with widely used traditional methods known as the Tree structure method and Fault Tree Analysis. SysML is a graphical modeling language that presents structural composition, component functions, behavior, constraints and requirements of a complex system. STPA is a risk analysis method that aims to identify and mitigate risks in a complex system. The review and comparison results are presented in the paper. The results of this study suggest that the modern methods are more suitable than the traditional methods when the functionality of each method are considered. However, as the modern methods are more detailed, and are focused on the functionality, they are relatively complex and require more resources for the analysis in comparison to the traditional methods. Some viable solutions to improve the drawbacks of SysML and STPA, and possible future research topics are presented.

Safety assurance of autonomous ships is one of the major long-term challenges faced by the mariti... more Safety assurance of autonomous ships is one of the major long-term challenges faced by the maritime world. Applying systemic hazard analysis methods at this early stage will guide the design and operation of safe autonomous ships. This paper proposes an initial hierarchical ship systems structure that could be the basis for a systemic hazard analysis of autonomous ship systems and operations. The approach is based on the systems theory and the principle of hierarchy and has been developed via the combination of models used in past research projects and requirements of the STCW convention. For enabling the operation of autonomous ships, the ship crew functions are either replaced by ship technical systems or assigned to the Shore-Based Control Centre (SCC).

Marine industry is set to experience a change of an era as the development of autonomous ships ha... more Marine industry is set to experience a change of an era as the development of autonomous ships has already started. However, the operation of autonomous ships is not possible unless the new types of hazards and its associated risks due to the rapid technological changes are identified and controlled. Thus, it is necessary to identify or develop a suitable risk management model that can identify these new types of risks. This paper aims to identify and suggest a suitable risk management model or a category of models for managing the risks in autonomous marine ecosystems. Firstly, the available models and their categories in all major domains such as aviation, automotive, railway and marine industry are explored. Then, a SWOT analysis is conducted for each model category to assess the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats. The results of the SWOT analysis show that the systemic models such as STAMP can be a suitable option than the traditional categories such as sequential and epidemiological models.
