According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple is ramping up development on a Studio Display replacement. The company initially debuted this monitor in 2022 and has left it untouched since. There isn’t much word on what’ll be new with this Studio Display refresh, but it’ll apparently be a companion to the upcoming M5 MacBook Pros.

Alongside the release of macOS Sonoma to the public today, Apple has also pushed a new firmware version to the Studio Display. Apple says that this Studio Display update includes changes to the camera, plus other stability improvements.

Apple’s plans to transition most of its product lines to OLED displays have been widely reported on in the past. A new report from analysts at research firm Omdia, however, sheds more light on Apple’s longer-term road map. In fact, according to this report, Apple is developing a 32-inch external display and a 42-inch external display, both with OLED screens.

Apple is rolling out a new firmware update for its Studio Display today. As we’ve reported before, the Studio Display runs firmware based on iOS and is powered by an A13 Bionic chip inside. This combination allows Apple to roll out firmware updates to the Studio Display, and today’s update is referred to as Apple Studio Display Firmware Update 15.5.

Currently, the entry-level Studio Display with the tilt-adjustable stand and standard glass is backordered to late July into early August, and there’s no indication those shipping estimates will improve anytime soon.
