iPhone SE: Upgrades, design changes, 5G, and more

Apple’s next generation iPhone SE may debut as early as next week. The device is rumored to provide the design language of the iPhone 14, with USB-C, an A18 chip with Apple Intelligence, and more. After years of rumors, Apple appears to finally be preparing to release the redesigned iPhone SE 4. Mark Gurman reports for Bloomberg that the new entry level iPhone could be announced as early as next week:

Earlier this month, some sources begun to claim that the next generation iPhone SE, which is expected to debut this spring, won’t actually be called ‘iPhone SE’ at all. We’re now starting to hear that it’ll be called ‘iPhone 16E’ instead. This may be a weird rumor, but I think it actually makes a lot of sense, given what we know so far about the iPhone SE 4.

According to Mark Gurman’s Power On newsletter, supply of the current generation iPhone SE, which debuted in 2022, is quickly shrinking. This is unsurprising, given the fact that we’re all expecting a new iPhone SE to debut in just a couple months. However, it is uniquely interesting, as it indicates that Apple likely has no plans to keep the current generation model around.

A leaker with a mixed track record has claimed that this year’s iPhone SE will be getting an upgraded name to reflect its new design: the iPhone 16E.

Now that the iPhone 16 lineup has been released to customers, some people might be thinking about what’s next for the iPhone. However, it isn’t the iPhone 17, and it’s just a few months away.

As previously reported, Apple will no longer sell the iPhone 14 and iPhone SE in the European Union due to local legislation that requires all smartphones sold there to have a USB-C port. After removing these models from the online store in some countries such as Switzerland, Apple has now ended sales of the iPhone 14 and SE in most EU countries.

As expected, Apple is starting to wind down sales of the Lightning-equipped iPhone SE and iPhone 14 lineups from the European Union. This comes as the EU’s common charger mandate is set to go into effect on December 28, requiring smartphones to feature USB-C for charging.

Some new images of iPhone SE 4 dummy units have been shared by Japanese Apple blog Macotakara today, showcasing a similar form factor to the iPhone 14, as we’d been expecting. The blog also highlights compatibility with existing iPhone 14 cases, and an alleged larger size option – which is unlikely to come to fruition.

No one knows what the ‘SE’ in iPhone SE really stands for. But we do know one thing: Apple’s SE devices aren’t known for introducing brand new tech. That’s set to change this spring, though, when the new iPhone SE is expected to come with one cutting edge upgrade: the very first Apple-made modem for handling 5G, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and GPS.
