Dwarf Wizard

Once upon a time, before they “forgot” how to use magic, Warhammer dwarfs had wizards… Games Workshop did a few dwarf wizards back in those days, this one being by far my favorite:

I don’t know how am I supposed to use him in an army with a Norsca theme, but he was to good to miss. The Walt Disney wizard clothes, the frog, the teeth showing, the bushy beard, the slightly odd air…Once again, exactly what I love in models of this generation: character, and a bit of humor. No more lunatics talking to frogs in the Warhammer world today – it’s all grim and gore. Pity.

Here he is on Stuff of Legends, in all his 1980s glory. We also find out the names of his sculptor(s): the always talented Alan & Michael Perry.

Marauder dwarf with 2-handed weapon…

Another addition to my unit of Dwarf warriors with two-handed weapons. A Marauder sculpt, realized either by Ally Morisson or Colin Dixon.

The unit so far…

The dwarf army is clearly an equal opportunity employer, so one can find there both the big- and the small-headed… The difference between Perry and Marauder sculpts is nowhere as clear as on this picture. I like both, needless to say. Morisson/Dixon/Marauder is a tad more satisfying to paint. The minis are chunkier, the details are bigger. But still – both are a treat.

Dwarfs!

And now, let’s move to the real passion: old school dwarfs!

The goal here is to have a workable force for small games of Kings of War, Warhammer Fantasy 8th ed (if I ever manage to get enough models for that), or an old school Warhammer Armies Dwarf Mercenary Force. I try to pick models that look like they could actually, anatomically function – which is difficult with Dwarfs, always a weakness in the Citadel/GW range. I also like models with a historical feel.

So two old school dwarfs today. The first one is a 1980s Norse Dwarf (Hammer 2) by the Perry brothers:

He is the first of a 10-15 troop of Norse dwarfs. He will also be one of the rare ones with a double-handed weapon – the others will be mostly equipped with hand-weapons and shields.

The second one will go in a 10-15 troop of double-handed weapons. The model is an Imperial Dwarf (Axe 23), again by the expert hands of the Perry twins.

Marienburgers, and a goblin…

Mordheim is a spin-off of the Warhammer universe, a skirmish ruleset where warbands battle in the wrecked city of Mordheim. While the game is not anymore visibly suported by Games Workshop, its various versions have a dedicated fanbase.

Marienburgers in Mordheim, as in Warhammer, are always colorful to paint, and I decided to push it with this little warband. These are the first members of the warband, but there will be more.

The head of the warband, a lost noble from Marienburg – his past surely dark, shameful and unknown to his companions. One of the miniatures of the Heroic Fighters of the Known World, Sir Brut. I have a few more of the same set, waiting in the lead pile… Superb Jes Goodwin work.

One of the heavy hitters of the warband, grizzled veteran and expert with the double-handed sword. This is a superb miniature, full of personnality (the night bonnet!) and very well sculpted. It is a Marauder “Fighter Command”. The sculptor is Ally Morisson, who has done more than big monsters. This fighter command is especially splendid.

The third figure is a Marauder dwarf handgunner. Here again, loads of character. The sculptor would be either one of the Morrisons, or more probably Colin Dixon.

And finally, the warband’s “brain”: an old Grenadier wizard. No reference here unfortunately…

AND to end up this series: a nice Kevin Adams Night Gobin. One of the smallest miniature I ever painted… Tiny little bugger, with a mean smile.

Gallic Warriors

Two Citadel “barbarians”, whom I recruted for a Gallic warband I use with the game system Song of Blades and Heroes.

The first one is a 1987 Barbarian Raider:

The second one is 1987 Barbarian (Vark Birdmaster):

Both shields are made with the shield decals provided with Warlord Games Celtic Warriors. Wonderful models, full of character, and perfectly fitting as the main strikers in a Gallic warband.

Old lead on the interweb…

Hello world!

The goal of this blog is very simple: I will use it as a shoebox to store pictures of my painted miniatures. Along the way, I will also try to find and display information on these models. Most of them are from one of the manufacturers that gravited around Games Workshop in the 1980s-1990s: Citadel, Marauder, Chronicle…

I might also add a few battle reports and other stuff to this space.
