On the Workbench [ March] - Dark Angels Assault Intercessors w/Jump Packs

Dark Angels Assault Intercessors with Jump Packs WIP
Hello and welcome back!  Wow, how time flies.  I let posting get away from me for a bit, but no worries.  We're building and painting as always here at 262Krieg. Today I'm sharing some Assault Intercessors with Jump Packs for the Dark Angels chapter.  Only minor customization here with Dark Angles chapter shoulders, fetishes, and hooded heads.  Oh, I also used a spare bionic plasma pistol arm for the squad Sergeant.

Dark Angels Assault Intercessors with Jump Packs WIP

As with many hobbyists, the Primaris range of space marines didn't sit well with me at first. However, I have to say that since embracing the range, I have very much enjoy building and painting the Primaris models.  These intercessors are no different.  The poses take some getting used to here, but I do like the motion and energy in each model.  Above, the squad Sergeant twists mid-jump to fire a blast of plasma at an unseen foe.

Next, a squad veteran takes a second plasma shot. I figure carrying plasma weapons is an honor amongst the assault intercessors bestowed only on those who earn it. As such, this veteran and the squad Sergeant bear distinct helmets under their hoods that stand apart from the standard issue.

I love all the war gear on these models.  Lots of pouches and grenades ready for the assault.

Dark Angels Assault Intercessors with Jump Packs WIP
After the fact, I recognized that these probably weren't the best models to put hoods on.  You can imagine the hoods never staying put with the force of the jumps.  It does allow this small squad to stand out amongst the rest of the chapter where I typically do not use hoods for the rank and file.  Again, I imagine jump packs to be special issue and handed out only to those who earn the right.

Dark Angels Assault Intercessors with Jump Packs WIP

Like any true assault warrior, drop the shoulder and charge!

Dark Angels Assault Intercessors with Jump Packs WIP

It's a small squad, but very fun to put together.  Perhaps I'll bulk them out to full strength at some point.  Regardless, they add some more interest and tactical flexibility to my 5th Company Dark Angels. It's great to see the jump packs finally make it to the Primaris line. And I like that they incorporated the flight stabilizers seen first on the Reivers.

So there is my small building project for late March.  I continue to putter away on the Death Korps of Krieg heavy weapons, so more on that project soon. I've taken a much more laid back approach to the hobby recently which has lowered productivity somewhat.  But I'm still happily hobbying for a bit most nights.

Dark Angels Primaris Intercessor Squad - TO DONE

Dark Angels Intercessors

Greetings and welcome back. As foretold, I have a completed demi-squad of Dark Angels Intercessors to share today.  I was able to close out the project over the weekend while enjoying some extra personal time on Father's Day.

Dark Angels Intercessors

I don't look forward to painting Intercessors for some reason; but I always enjoy painting Intercessors. 😂 yeah, I don't get it either.  Lots of detail on the models, not so fussy to pick out everything as it can be on the characters.  Strong poses, sharp edges on the details.  Nothing really not to like.  But for some reason it's like pulling teeth to sit down and paint a squad.  Well, I now have ten painted up including this lot to finally complete 1st squad for my 5th company Dark Angels collection. I'll enjoy the Big ol' Stamp of DONE and move on.

I primed and began painting a squad of three Dark Angels Aggressors and a Captain/Master in Gravis armor to join them.  I'm entertaining the idea of painting them as members of the 9th support company.  Otherwise, I don't have a reason for a 5th company Captain/Master since that would be Lazarus. Since I'm not actively playing games, I don't have to burden myself with building/painting what plays well on the table. :)  So it's more a fluff scenario here. Anyway - lots of paint to lay down before I need to be concerned with company markings.

So that's it for today.  Lots of close up picks of the marines below after the break if you are looking for inspiration.

Cheers and Happy Gaming!

Dark Angels Primaris Intercessor Squad WIP

Dark Angels Primaris Intercessors WIP

Short post today to share a new project following close on the heels of the Dark Angels characters.  I have five Intercessors already painted, but that's it; well other than a squad of ten assault Intercessors.  So I was well over due to add some more painted troops to my growing force of painted Primaris Dark Angels. Given I was in a groove painting Dark Angels, it seemed like a 'strike while the iron is hot' sort of moment.

After only two sessions these fellas are already well on their way.  Less detail (when compared to the characters) helps progress move forward rapidly!  All of the base colors are laid down and I'm on to highlights, transfers, company markings and then painting the bases.  Maybe a TO DONE post next, we'll see. Soon I'll have 10 painted Intercessors.  Hooray!  😂

Dark Angels Intercessors and Heavy Intercessors - TO DONE

Greetings.  Today I put to rest the Intercessor project with a big old stamp of DONE.

This project took a bit longer than I expected, but some of that was down to vacations and summer in general effecting how much time I could commit to the hobby.  I had a good time painting these models all the same and it was a satisfying project, taken in all.

There are more closeups from the light box after the break.

Stay safe out there.

Dark Angels Intercessor and Heavy Intercessor WIP - Part 5

Dark Angels Intercessors and Heavy Intercessors WIP

Greetings! The intercessors edge ever closer to done.  I really didn't expect these ten marines to stall me so completely. Regardless, they are coming out just fine and progress is being made.  For this week, I have managed some freehand on the 5th company badges for the knee pads.

Dark Angels Intercessor WIP

Getting the lines for the checks to look right on the rounded knee pads could drive a person insane. It should be simple to draw/paint a cross and fill in the sections. It turns out a bit more challenging than one might expect, at least for me. 😖

Dark Angels Intercessors WIP

Next up were the decals/transfers.  I very much enjoy applying decals, so this went well and was a nice break from painting.

Dark Angels Intercessors WIP

I have no real rhyme nor reason to my squad numbering.  Here I decided this was my first squad of intercessors so they got to be squad '1'.  But with the Heavy Intercessors...

Dark Angels Heavy Intercessors WIP

I randomly decided these lads would be squad '2', maybe because they were the second squad of intercessors?  They also got some shiny new wings on the other shoulder.

Dark Angels Heavy Intercessors WIP

As a detail, the skulls on the Sergeant helmets were painted bone, and the scrolls all got some text using a black fine point marker (with some red here and there). Oh, and the guns got an additional orange highlight over the previous red highlights to brighten things up a bit.

The decals will get a coat of GW Lahmian Medium, followed by a light wash to blend them with the look of the rest of the armor.   like to give the Micro Sol a decent amount of time to dry. After this treatment, the decals will blend better and won't pop quite as much.

Bases need to get done and some final details, like the Sergeant's equipment (write computer on one , and augury hanging form the belt of the other) need work. I'd like to say one more session, but we'll see.

In the meantime, stay safe out there.

Cheers and Happy Gaming!

Dark Angels Intercessor and Heavy Intercessor WIP - Part 3

Dark Angels Intercessors and Heavy Intercessors WIP

Greetings and welcome back.  The Intercessor project has continued. I managed to get the chest eagles painted and shaded.  Then some gold details and purity seals were painted, followed by some shading with GW Agrax Earthshade.

Dark Angels Heavy Intercessors WIP

Then I started in on the green armor highlights.  I'm pretty slow with edge highlighting, and there is A LOT to do with these Primaris marines.  As a result, I managed only the five Intercessors so far.

Dark Angels Intercessors WIP

So it's back to the five Heavy Intercessors to complete the armor highlights.  Then I'll start highlighting the rest of the details (weapons, leather work, etc.). once I get through that it'll be time for transfers and final cleanup...oh and let's not forget the bases! Still plenty to do, but they are already looking like proper Dark Angels marines now.

Posts have slowed a bit as there isn't much to show day-to-day when batch painting like this.  I only put in a couple hours a night and there's no need to bore you with one detail at a time.  I'm likely riding the edge of boredom here as it is. 😂 Hopefully there are still enough readers out there that appreciate seeing how another painter works, stage by stage.

Until next time,

Cheers and Happy Gaming!

Dark Angels Intercessor and Heavy Intercessor WIP - Part 2

Dark Angels Primaris Intercessors WIP

Greetings.  Not as much progress to share as I expected early in the week, but progress none-the-less.  The various weapons have been painted and then the models were heavily shaded with GW Nuln Oil.

Dark Angels Primaris Intercessors WIP

While painting the weapons, I also painted other metal details like the sergeant's arm computer and various backpack vents and nozzles. The various colors I'm using are available on the paint recipe tab above, so I won't go through all of that again here.  I'm using Monument hobby paints for this project, rather then the original colors I started with.  I've made notations anywhere that's relevant in the recipe.

Dark Angels Primaris Intercessors WIP

The dark shading really dulls them down. However, additional layering and highlighting will brighten things back up appropriately.  I definitely paint in a subdued, drab style, make no mistake.

Dark Angels Primaris Heavy Intercessors WIP

Funny thing about the Heavy Intercessors. Somewhere in the priming and base coating process I really gummed these guys up.  It's not super obvious (I hope) here on the screen, but when you handle these guys it stands out.  I almost tossed them in some Simple Green to strip, clean and start over.  But I decided to stick it out and complete them. It's not awful, but the savvy will notice where the details are not as sharp as they should be. I suspect I got a little carried away during priming, since I used a rattle can this time around. We'll see what the paintwork can do to compensate.

Dark Angels Primaris Heavy Intercessors WIP

So that's 10 marines further along the path to done. Next will be adding all the details that get shaded in brown instead of black (gold, purity seals, etc.).  Then I'll kick in all the highlighting.  I maintain that progress should pick up now, if I can make the time available to get work done. It's summer and my girls are getting older and going to bed later so my evening painting window has shortened a bit.

How are your projects coming along?

Cheers and Happy Gaming!

Dark Angels Intercessor and Heavy Intercessor WIP

Dark Angels Intercessor Sergeant WIP

Greetings.  The next project is launched.  I decided to address a need for troops to join my growing force of Primaris Dark Angels.  Rather than batch paint one squad of 10 Intercessors (an easy go-to project), I decided to batch paint a five man squad of Intercessors and the five man squad of Heavy Intercessors I recently assembled.  I mean what could be more fun?  Right?!

Dark Angels Intercessor Squad WIP

I haven't made all that much progress so far, but I didn't want to go too long without sharing some progress. So here we have the five Intercessors.  They have been based using Black Green Pro-Acryl from Monument Hobbies. I painted the leather equipment and the eye lenses on top of this to end the first session of the new project. As a bonus, spot the one Intercessor I shaded with Nuln Oil before recognizing I should wait until more of the base colors are on so I can shade everything that needs Nuln Oil at one time.

Dark Angels Intercessor Squad WIP

The five Heavy Intercessors were painted at the same time and in the same manner.

Dark Angels Heavy Intercessor Squad WIP

Having five different models (OK, not THAT much different) breaks the monotony of painting a full squad of 10 models that are basically the same. And in the end I'll have two squads instead of one complete, which is a nice bonus.  I'll come back and paint another five Intercessors at some point to fill out that squad.  Not sure about the Heavy Intercessors.  Five might be just fine for the games I'm not playing. 😂

Dark Angels Heavy Intercessor Squad WIP

So that's that for session one of the new project.  More progress will happen this week and the two squads should be much more interesting when I share them next. I like the Heavy Intercessor Sergeant with the hand up signalling a halt or cease fire.  It's something we expect a squad leader to do that is rarely modeled.  I really didn't plan to use the new Primaris line to usurp the traditional models from my Dark Angels force.  But they really are just so fun to build and paint. I haven't regretted the project one bit.

Stay safe out there.

Cheers ad Happy Gaming!

On the Workbench [March]

Dark Angels Heavy Intercessors WIP

Greetings and welcome back to another article about whats on my workbench.  I skipped a couple months due to focus on my painting projects, but here's a project I thought would be worth sharing.  I was able to pick up a copy of Kill Team: Pariah Nexus and immediately set to building the marines.  These models will join the Indomitus Dark Angels force I recently painted up.  I chose to build the Heavy Intercessors with the "executor" option for increased damage potential at range.  The only problem was, all the sergeant arms used the default Heavy Bolt Rifle, with no option to swap the clips.  This was a bummer, as I love to keep things WYSIWYG. So there was nothing to do but get out the tools and start hacking...

Dark Angels Heavy Intercessors WIP

In order to to make a clip that could attach to the sergeant's bolt gun, I needed to cut away the plastic that would be part of the gun.  There is no need, in my opinion, to try and get the whole part in there as the differences are mainly to the size and shape of the clip itself, not the receiver/port ejector, etc. And as you'll see below, the arm I chose hides most of this anyway from all but very close inspection.

Dark Angels Heavy Intercessors WIP

The pic above illustrates the plastic I removed from the clip,  I made special effort to save the two prongs just below the removed plastic...I bent them a bit, but was mostly successful.

Dark Angels Heavy Intercessors WIP

I didn't take detailed pictures of the modifications to the sergeant's arm, but you can see the results above.  Using the blade of the forearm as a plane, I cut the existing clip off with flush cutters (sharp sprue cutters).  A small saw would have worked if I was careful too.  I then clipped off the front of the clip being VERY careful to preserve the fingers that were up against it. The new clip is shown above so you can see the notch I cut out of it to fit over the modified bolt gun.

Dark Angels Heavy Intercessors WIP

Here it is again with the clip oriented as it will be glued down. The two prong bits at the top are easy to see to now, with some white discoloration from accidentally bending them...but I didn't snap or cut them off fortunately!

Dark Angels Heavy Intercessors WIP

With the clip glued on, you are hard pressed to tell that this is not an Executor Bolt Rifle without careful comparison to and original.  And this view is hard against the model's body once attached so you can't even see it without careful inspection.

Dark Angels Heavy Intercessors WIP

From the other side, it looks totally normal. Let's see how things look fully assembled.

Dark Angels Heavy Intercessors WIP

The clip visible from the underside of the arm.  Once painted up, I doubt it will be obvious at all that this isn't and original part.

Dark Angels Heavy Intercessors WIP

From the left side of the model, the obvious view now looks like the profile of an Executor bolt rifle. It's a pretty simple conversion that will keep the squad looking coherent since they must be armed with the same weapons.  I'm a stickler for details. 😂 If you don't fancy cutting up the models like this, don't worry.  There is currently no point difference between the three different options for this squad, so WYSIWYG is more of an aesthetic thing anyway here, though it can certainly avoid confusion for those who know what to look for.

Fun Fact: There is no indication in the instructions or the Space marine codex of what each pattern of bolt rifle look like. However, if you poke through the Pariah Nexus rule book, there are color photos of the models.  And if you read the captions carefully you can find examples of the models called out with the various options - though I think there are mistakes/inconsistencies to watch out for in the examples.

So that's all that I have on the workbench in March.  I really need to get back to the Warlord-Sinister Psi-titan I'm painting for #MonsterMarch5.

Stay safe out there.

Cheers and Happy Gaming!

Dark Angels Assault Intercessors - TO DONE

Dark Angels Assault Intercessors

Coming off DreadTober 2020, I hoped back onto the Assault Intercessor project to complete the boys I had been painting back in September.  The Indomitus models are great fun to paint and I'm excited to get them done.

Dark Angels Assault Intercessor SergeantDark Angels Assault Intercessor Sergeant

The Intercessor Sergeant got some transfer upgrades for his tilting shield. A red skull for rank and the Indomitus campaign badge.  This kept the shield from just being another copy of the knee pad insignia for the company.

I didn't want to put up pics of all ten models since there a re duplicate poses.  So here are a few shots of the various individual poses instead.

Now it's time to move on to the Primaris Eradicators.  Then I'll be done with Indomitus green marines and It'll be on to the Outriders, I think.  But I'm getting ahead of myself, as usual.  For now I'll simply enjoy this big old seal of DONE for this project.

Stay safe out there.
