2021 Inquisitional Conclave - Gregor Eisenhorn and Cherubael - TO DONE

Inquisitor Gregor Eisenhorn and Cherubael

Greetings fellow hobbyists.  Today I announce that my project for the 2021 Inquisitorial Conclave is DONE.  What follows is a big stamp o' DONE for the completion and some follow up picks from the light box after the break.

This brings the 2020/21 hobby season to a close here at 262Krieg.  I look forward to getting a copy of the new Kill Team box. The 2021/22 hobby season promises to have more KRIEG in it. I'm also looking forward to DreadTober 2022.  Lots of fun projects planned.

 Stay safe out there.

Cheers and Happy Gaming!

2021 Inquisitional Conclave - Gregor Eisenhorn WIP - Week 3

Cherubael WIP

Greetings.  For week three of the 2021 Inquisitorial Conclave (my week 2 for the project) I completed Eisenhorn and started on his buddy Cherubael.  Cherubael is a Deamonhost and a bonus part to this project since I wasn't certain to get Gregor done in time.

Cherubael WIP

It all started here where I experimented with a pale, corrupted flesh and the notion of warp power emanating from within the daemonhost.  It's odd, and totally NOT in my normal repertoire, but I became inspired and decided to keep it.  I especially liked the glowing eyes and light coming out of the open mouth.

Cherubael WIP

This led to more base colors, shading and highlighting as I fleshed out the model and it began to take shape.   The painting went rather quickly and spontaneously.  I had only the vaguest notion of what I wanted here, based on five-to-ten minutes of google image searching to see what others had done with this model.

Cherubael WIP

And ultimately I ended up here. The trapped daemon, Cherubael is clearly conjuring warp power, but remains held in check by the powerful wards that Gregor Eisenhorn has put in place.  Metal, scrolls, leather, and red cloth are all pretty much stock from my usual recipes. This model is painted primarily with ProAcryl paints from Monument Hobbies, with GW shades and a couple washes form Secret Weapon Miniatures (Flesh Wash, and Cool Grey).

Cherubael WIP

The base was painted to match Eisenhorn's.  Here are the two models together.  I'm pausing to consider whether or not to be done.

Inquisitor Gregor Eisenhorn and Daemonhost Cherubael WIP

Taken in all, these have been quite enjoyable to paint and a welcome diversion from my normal selection of projects.  I am proxying Cherubael with the resin "Captive Unleashed" model from Artel "W" Miniatures.  The model is also available in 54mm scale which would make a great painting project.

So that's where I'm at with this project.  It's probably done, but we'll see.  I'll certainly post up a "TO DONE" post with light box pictures next week, regardless.  Are they done?...yeah...well, maybe....

Stay safe out there!

2021 Inquisitional Conclave - Gregor Eisenhorn WIP - Week 2 progress

Ordo Xenos Inquisitor Gregor Eisenhorn WIP

Gregor Eisenhorn walks!  Entering week three of the 2021 Inquisitional Conclave  (week 2 for me), I have completed enough of the model to mount it on the base. All areas of the model have been painted now, and most highlights have been applied. I've danced quite a bit around the face, so much so it seems Gregor has been using relying heavily on juvinat treatments lately. 😆 I'm mostly content with the results, though I'm not thrilled with the eyes so they may change before the week is out.

I love the base and it felt great to pin the model to it at last. I used a brown .005 Micron pen to ink some text onto the left shoulder purity seal.  It's such an easy cheat.

I'm liking the heavy leather cloak a lot. The ornate bolt pistol is pretty cool too.

The model is largely complete at this point and could be left as is.  However, since I have a few more days before heading out on vacation, I will lavish more attention on it.  There is no time to pick up a new project this month anyway. So I'll clean up a few things, highlight a few others, and generally bring this model TO DONE by the end of the week when I'll put up my last post for August.

Until then,stay safe out there.

Cheers and Happy Gaming!

2021 Inquisitional Conclave - Gregor Eisenhorn WIP

credit: The Neverness Hobby Chronicle

Greetings and welcome to my first post of the 2021 Inquisitorial Conclave.  This is my first year participating.  As it happened, I had this sitting on the shelf waiting for my time...

40K Ordo Xenos Inquisitor Gregor Eisenhorn WIP

It was primed black sometime ago using my typical choice of Vallejo Surface Primer Black.  So it was really no problem to pick it up and start painting, now that my Intercessors were complete.  Now...will I finish?  That remains yet to be seen, but I'm all in for trying.  I have some camping with the family at the end of August, so I really have just this week and next to get the Inquisitor completed...and I guess the last couple days of the month when I'm back from the woods to finish up if need be.

I'm using Monument Hobbies Pro Acryl paints for this project with some added GW Nuln Oil and Agrax Earthsahde on top here and there.  I'm and "inside out" painter for the most part.  So I got started blocking in the undersides of the various flappy layers, the pants, and the boots.  Then I looked at the shirt and started adding on some other bits like the holster and other straps.  This is always a fun time because the model typically looks rather terrible at this point.

After various layers of shade, details started to appear and old Gregor started to take shape.  He still looks pretty bad though, if I'm being honest.  But this is all part of the process. If one can stick it out to cross this divide, beauty waits on the far side.

I took a break at his point to look at the base.  I had been dabbling with it while waiting for various shades to dry.

Back when i assembled Gregor, I added some of my typical model railroad gravel mix around the resin rubble to fill the base in more naturally.  So after priming, I simply covered the whole thing in a medium/light grey and gave it a coat of Monument Hobbies Pro Acryl Transparent Black. It's a bit like a contrast paint from GW, but not as goopy...sort of between contrast and Nuln Oil.  Anyway, it thins well for controlling how dark things get.

Then it was an easy matter to pick out the details.  I'm cleaving to the box art for Gregor as I felt it already looked pretty cool and I didn't see what I was likely to do to improve on it.  That and I'm a helplessly avid follower of the cannon in any case.

The base is now ready to receive Gregor when he's prepared.  I tidied up a bit and added details like the rebar, shell cases, and odd demonic skull bit. Not 100% thrilled with the skull so we'll see where that ends up later.  Here, you can see the latest shade layer is still drying.

But that's where I'm at so far in week two of the Conclave.  A late start, but I've leapt in with some gusto and we'll see where that enthusiasm takes me.

Stay safe out there.

Cheers and Happy Gaming!

On the Workbench [September] - Inquisitor Eisenhorn and Cherubael

As a bonus workbench project for September, I secured a Cherubael model to from Artel "W" Miniatures to go with my Eisenhorn model.  When I saw that Eisenhorn's rules allowed for him to summon a demonhost, I knew I needed to paint one up to go along side.  After trawling eBay, I managed to get ahold of an old daemonhost to use.  But I wanted Cherubael...after all Eisenhorn isn't summoning just any old daemonhost.  He commands a very specific deamonhost: Cherubael!

The model from Artel "W" is the right beast, no doubt.  Right away, I was impressed with the packaging.  I really hoped this wasn't a smoke screen to shift focus from a sub-par model.  I was not disappointed.  The Cherubael sculpt is well cast and VERY detailed.  It was a bit fiddly to assemble, to be fair, but quite satisfying for any extra care required.

First up, here is Inquisitor Eisenhorn after being assembled and mounted for painting.

I added a bit of my custom ballast/ground cover to add some interest around where the resin met the base.  This removed the obvious void around the sculpted part of the base.  If you've read any of the Eisenhorn Black Library material, then you can judge Cherubael for yourself.

The chains didn't seem to hang quite right so I took a heat gun to them...

There, that's much better.  More motion, more natural shape as the beast thrashes about in his bindings.  More custom ground cover completed the base to tie it all together.  With more patience, I would have worked on some sort of stone/metal cell floor so the chains made more sense being anchored down.  But let's face it...we're painting models of daemons, it shouldn't be so odd that he appears shackled to bare ground.

I'm looking forward to painting these two.  I suspect I won't get to them for a while though.  I'm dedicating most of September to finishing my House Taranis Questoris Knight Paladin and then we'll be into DreadTober.  So look for these guys hitting the painting table in November at the earliest.

Are you working on anything purely for the hobby love?  If so, let me know in the comments.

Cheers and Happy Gaming!

The Retinue for Inquisitor Russ!

Ordo Malleus Inquisitor Retinue

Here is the retinue for Inquisitor Hadrian Russ.  An acolyte, four crusaders, five death cult assassins, and three servo skulls.  Having completed the Inquisitor, it's time to move on and complete the retinue.
Ordo Malleus Inquisitor Retinue WIP

I kept the dark grimy feel form the inquisitor and adopted a palette of grey/black, red and gold overall.  A splash of color on the acolyte helps her stand out, I hope.  I'm really excited with the crusaders.  I used decals from a witch hunter's sheet to get Inquisition iconography for the left shoulder and a straight white skull for the right.  All the unit insignia they need under the circumstances.

Still quite a bit to do so stay tuned. I'll continue to update the post as I go to detail my progress...

Inquisitor Hadrian Russ of the Ordo Malleus

Custom Ordo Malleus Inquisitor

Greetings!

Below is the project break down for an Inquisitor model I worked on this month for a painting competition over on the Mengel Miniatures Forum.

Ordo Malleus Inquisitor WIP

The Inquisitor was built from a Forgeworld Legion Praetor model with weapon swaps using parts from the Forgeworld Warhammer 30K line to represent a more antique and baroque version of a thunder hammer and combi-melta.  The Praetor model provided an older look for terminator armor. This all combined to give what I hope is a very different look from the standard 40k line.  After all, an inquisitor's kit is likely old and unique!

Now with more bling!

Next I airbrushed a coat of Vallejo German Panzer Grey surface primer over the whole model. Then the real fun began with the first painting session...

Trying some new things with the black armor that I haven't played with before...basically building up increasingly grey highlights, rather than starting light and washing/shading down with inks. Thanks to my mediocre photography and all the shiny gold, the subtleties of the black armor don't really show here.

During the next sessions I base coated and shaded most of the remaining model, except the base.  Some highlighting is applied and I experimented with text on the scrolls.  Not very happy with the text at this point so I may have to redo the scrolls...

The model starts to come out looking like an Inquisitor now with more definition of the various areas of color and texture. I'm looking forward to the base which will be a mid-tone earth with light highlights to help the darker figure stand out.

Below I have made progress on the base, head and other details.  I could call this done at this point, but I expect I'll do a bit more.  I'm going to seal the model in a flat coat before completing the last detailing/cleanup.  Should be done soon!

I experimented a little on the head with some mottling to represent age spots.  Hadrian Russ is an old dude and more practically, I didn't want a large bald uniform head and simple washes weren't gettign me where I wanted the look to go.  I'm thinking he needs eyebrows, but every attempt kept coming out like a couple woolybear catepillars crawling over his brow...so I bailed...they were no doubt scorched off countless times and covered in scar tissue so they don't grow out any longer. :)

Oh, I added a couple spent bolter shells on the base to tell more of the story.  In my mind, the Inquisitor has just stepped from his ride onto the battlefield into the teeth of the fight, first opening up with his bolter and possibly aiming to fry some hard target with the combi-melta!

Another pass at highlights and shading.  We're pretty much on the last mile now....the model is complete as things go, but I haven't been able to give up looking for areas to improve. The flat coat varnish from Army Painter that I airbrushed on dramatically changed to look of the armor. For fun I started experimenting with backgrounds other than white as well...

Ordo Malleus Inquisitor

Following some advice I dulled down the red of the combi-melta so it doesn't stand out quite so much and draw the eye away form the Inquisitor's head and face.  Here is the final set of images that will be submitted for the contest.

All in all a very rewarding project.  I have been thinking about and planning for a custom inquisitor model for a long time.  I have enjoyed the project and the chance to really explore my painting skills and try out some of the stuff I've been reading and thinking about.
