This study models simultaneously three commonly used indicators of fear of crime — feeling unsafe alone at home after dark, feeling unsafe walking alone after dark and worry about becoming a victim of crime — against direct (being a victim) and indirect (knowing a victim) victimization, controlling for demographic and socioeconomic characteristics of individuals via multivariate, i.e. multiple responses, multilevel analysis of data from Athens, Greece. The results show that (a) the association of the three indicators weakens as key explanatory factors of fear of crime are accounted for, (b) crime experiences are related to feeling unsafe at home alone after dark only via its association with feeling unsafe walking alone after dark and worry about becoming a victim of crime and (c) indirect and direct prior victimization and crime exposure predominantly shape perceived future risk.

Research on fear of crime began in the 1960s 1 and continued with an ever increasing interest, so that the 1980s to be considered as its 'golden age' 2 . These surveys are continued with undiminished interest in our days, while they also evolve methodologically aiming at the necessary interdisciplinary approach and the thorough examination of the phenomenon 3 .

It is a fact that in the last ten years, the map of the centre of Athens has changed radically. The massive influx of foreigners, mainly from countries of Western and Southern Asia (Pakistan, Iran, and Bangladesh), Northern and Central Africa (Algeria, Morocco, Somalia, Nigeria) and their settlement throughout the city centre has changed the area's profile and population composition. The magnitude of this change is so obvious, that the question of 'ghettos' existence sounds rational. Although discovering the answer is not an easy task, this study, based on international scientific experience, on field observation and on the study of city center residents´ opinion, attempts to examine the correlation between the perceived environmental degradation and the insecurity of the Greek inhabitants of the city centre areas.

Questo articolo si focalizza sulla necessità di elaborare procedure e predisporre servizi per il sostegno alle vittime del crimine, enfatizzando l'importanza che alcuni fattori rivestono sia nell'ambito della prevenzione e protezione delle vittime che nella pianificazione e realizzazione di politiche criminali razionali. Queste ultime non possono essere implementate se prevalgono punti di vista esageratamente punitivi e vendicativi. Occorre naturalmente tener conto sia del ruolo regolatore dello stato che del partenariato tra governo centrale e istituzioni decentralizzate delle comunità locali.

Η αποτίμηση που κάνω είναι μόνο θετική από κάθε άποψη. Πρώτον, διότι κατά το χρονικό διάστημα των σπου-Στον Καθηγητή Νέστορα Κουράκη και στον Δρα Κωνσταντίνο Πανάγο ΣΥΝΕΝΤΕΥΞΗ ΜΕ ΤΗΝ ΓΕΝΙΚΗ ΓΡΑΜΜΑΤΕΑ ΤΗΣ ΕΛΛΗΝΙΚΗΣ ΕΤΑΙΡΕΙΑΣ ΕΓΚΛΗΜΑΤΟΛΟΓΙΑΣ ΚΑΘΗΓΗΤΡΙΑ ΧΡΙΣΤΙΝΑ ΖΑΡΑΦΩΝΙΤΟΥ

Βάσει των δημοσιευμένων στατιστικών της αστυνομίας, παρατηρούμε ότι ορισμένες κατηγορίες εγκλημάτων  ακολούθησαν αυξητική πορεία, ενώ άλλες πτωτική. Από τα παραπάνω στοιχεία, προκύπτει μια ποσοτική και ποιοτική διαφοροποίηση της εγκληματικότητας την τελευταία δεκαετία στην Ελλάδα με κύρια χαρακτηριστικά: την αύξηση της βίας που συνοδεύει τα εγκλήματα κατά της ιδιοκτησίας, την αύξηση της εγκληματικότητας του δρόμου καθώς και τη μετατόπισή της σε ευάλωτους στόχους όπως είναι οι οικίες, τα περίπτερα κλπ. Τα εγκλήματα αυτά τελούνται στην πλειονότητά τους στα δύο μεγαλύτερα αστικά κέντρα της χώρας, την Αθήνα και τη Θεσσαλονίκη,  γεγονός που εξηγεί και τη μεγαλύτερη ανασφάλεια των κατοίκων τους.
