At 18th Street Arts Center we create and protect stories told with ART

I feel a deep sense of honor and privilege to get to hold the role I do here at 18th Street. I am so grateful I am now a part of this beautiful community. As someone who was born and raised in Los Angeles, I was shocked and ever so pleasantly surprised to discover this place has existed for as long as it has! In fact, since starting here, I’ve heard a similar story over and over from others that visit for the first time: “How did I not know this place was here?”

So as we step into 2026, I can’t wait to meet two of 18th Street's founders, Linda Frye-Brunham and Steve Durland for the first time and hear their stories about the early days! May this be a year 18th Street Arts Center becomes even more unmistakably visible, a beacon of light for our city and our neighboring communities. A place people think of when they need to be reminded that beauty and resistance and imagination are still alive.

Thank you for being a part of this community, whether by making work, by showing up to events, by telling others about us, by reading emails like this one instead of just letting them disappear into the inbox void. You are the reason this place is more than just buildings and studios.

You are the beating heart of it.

I look forward to seeing you around campus and at the next Intersection. To have conversation, to hug, to stand shoulder to shoulder united in our shared quest to change our community and our world with the art we create.

With much love and gratitude,

Tyler Madsen
Operations Manager

18th Street Art Center Presents

High Performance: Low Drama

18th Street is proud to announce High Performance: Low Drama as its participation in High Performance: A 2-Year Conference (2025–2027). This unprecedented, multi-year initiative is dedicated to High Performance magazine, the Los Angeles-based publication that from 1978 to 1997 was the first international magazine devoted exclusively to performance art, an art form that has uniquely strengthened American democracy by giving diverse voices a public stage from which to question power and expand civic imagination.

Through collaborations among the 18th Street Arts Center (18SAC), the Getty Research Institute (GRI), Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions (LACE), Highways Performance Space and Gallery (HPSG), and the Performance Art Museum (PAM)—together with academic partners—this effort will explore High Performance’s lasting impact on the fields of art and performance. The initiative will develop programming that examines, celebrates, and documents the magazine’s history while extending its influence to a new generation of performance artists, scholars, and educators.

At 18th Street High Performance: Low Drama will be a collection of events, reflections of the magazine, performances, and exhibitions. Keep an eye on the events identified as Part of High Performance: Low Drama.
