A Place in Time: A Summer School for the Study of Women and Temporalities in Early Modern Europe

Organised by Léon Rochard and Agathe Bonnin

Antoon van Dyck, Portrait of Maria de’ Medici, c. 1631. Lille, Palais des Beaux-Arts.

The goal of this summer school, organised with the support of the Institut du Genre, the FNS/Sinergia project “Capturing the Present in Northwestern Europe (1348-1648)” and HARTIS (Université de Lille), partnered with the Palais des Beaux-Arts de Lille, is to help doctoral students develop an interdisciplinary reflection on the intersection between gender and time in the early modern period. With the help of invited keynote speakers, workshops around secondary literature, visits of the Palais des Beaux-Arts’s collections presented by its curators, and presentations by each participant, we aim to foster interest in this framework and complexify approaches to gender studies and key themes such as the question of agency or the inscription of women in history. This summer school will be structured around three main themes:

  1. Rhytmic lives: contextualising the rhythm of women’s lives historically, socially and culturally, beyond bioessentialist thinking.
  2. Thinking in the long term: explore women’s engagement with the distant past or future, and questions of heritage and legacy.
  3. Time and power: understanding the intersections between gender, power, and politics, to better define how women exercised agency over different temporalities.

This summer school is open to both doctoral students and master’s students who wish to pursue a PhD, specialising in the human sciences and the early modern period, with no requirements in terms of nationality or institution. Both English and French will be spoken. Candidates are invited to send a CV, a description of the current research project, thesis, or dissertation with an indication of the potential interest of this summer school to the project, and an abstract for a presentation connected to one or several of the three proposed themes.

Please refer to the call for applications below for additional information:

Participants are invited to turn to their institutions to cover travel expenses and accommodations, as organisers can only cover collective meals.
